SCHOOL DISTRICT OF HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA Middle Schools Social Studies Grade Level Expectations Record Form Europe The 7th Geography grade student will: Time, Continuity, and Change [History] Explain the influence and control of Christianity and the Catholic Church throughout Europe's history. Describe the spread of both ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Describe the myths of ancient Greek and Rome including their use today. Analyze the causes and effects of the Crusades. (1100) Analyze the causes and effects of the Bubonic Plague (Black Death) (Ring around the Rosy).

(1350) Identify the meaning and factors that inspired the Renaissance and how it influenced thinking in Europe and America. (mid 1400s) Identify the factors that motivated Europeans to explore beyond the European countries between the 15th and 17th centuries. Describe the concept of Enlightenment and its role in European history including the accomplishments of major Enlightenment thinkers like Locke, Rousseau and Voltaire. (1650s-1700s) Explain the events and causes of the French Revolution. (1789) Trace the events leading to and the influences of the Industrial Revolution. (For example, the shrinking of the Aral Sea and the acid rain of the Black Forest) Explain how some European nations use their environment to enhance human life. (Such as polders and hydroelectric power) Government and the Citizen [Civics and Government] Describe the development of and importance of items such as the Magna Carta, parliament and habeas corpus on society today. Identify important major historical and modern European leaders. Compare and contrast various types of government that shaped Europe. (monarchy, etc.)

Describe the emergence and development of the feudal system. Trace Hitler’s rise to power in Germany and European nations’ response. Production, Distribution, and Consumption [Economics] Describe the purposes and achievements of the European Union. Explain why Europe has a highly developed network of highways, waterways, railroads, and airline linkages. Explain the principals of communism and socialism Identify the causes and effects of the Euro as a standard monetary unit in the European Union. Compare standards of living in various European countries.
