The House of Representatives

This lesson’s main purpose is for the students to learn about more details of the Legislative branch and, specifically, the powers of the House of Representatives. The lesson will review the Senate and then compare the similarities and differences between the Senate and the House of Representatives. 7. Pre-lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge: Students have already been introduced to the Legislative branch and the Senate the day before. By previously watching the Brain pop video on the three branches of government as well as the School House rock video on the three branches of government, the students understand that Congress is split up into two parts called the Senate and the House of Representatives; because of this the students will be prepared to learn about the second part of Congress, the House of Representatives. 8. Lesson Beginning: To start the lesson, I will show part of the Brain pop video that focuses solely on the Legislative branch to focus the students on the main part of today’s lesson. (http://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/usgovernmentandlaw/branchesofgovernment/) The Brain pop video will reinforce the information they students learned in the previous day, but it will also allow the students to focus on the information they did not learn about the House of Representatives. At the end of the video, the students will be asked to make connections to the information they learned in the previous day and then pick out new and unfamiliar information about the House of Representatives.

9. Instructional Plan:  I will review information about the previous day  Students will interact and review the branches of government by reinforcing the knowledge through Brain Pop  I will introduce the main topic of today’s lesson by stopping the video after the Legislative branch section is over  Students will recall the information about the Legislative branch and then point out new information about the Legislative branch  Selected students will be asked to pass out the lap book worksheet  I will model a completed lap book worksheet to avoid confusions among students  Students will read slides off the PowerPoint and fill in the blanks of the lap book worksheets while the PowerPoint progresses  Students will cut out the facts from the lap book worksheet  Students will glue the facts onto manila folders, using the model for help if needed  Students can share their completed lap books with others  Students will write two sentences using a list of vocabulary words associated with the Legislative branch lessons.

o Differentiation: Students will be shown the Brain pop video to give a visual meaning to the content the students are learning and reinforce prior knowledge. The PowerPoint, also complete with visuals, will allow the visual learners to match pictures with new information. For those students who struggling with spelling or are slower with writing in answers, I will provide lap book worksheets with a word bank to assist them as well as a word bank to help the students write their two sentences in the closing activity.

o Questions:  What are the responsibilities of the House of Representatives?  What are the qualifications to become a representative?  What building houses the House of Representatives?  What are the differences between the House and the Senate?  What are the similarities between the House and the Senate? o Classroom Management: Students will be seated at their desks throughout the House of Representatives lesson. The materials will be distributed and collected by the teacher and selected students in order to avoid excess movement and distractions throughout the lesson. At the beginning of the lesson, the students will be reminded to raise their hand if they have a question, answer, or something to say. If the students become loud or unfocused throughout the lesson, they will be asked to lower their voices using the clapping method or “1,2,3 eyes on me” method.

o Transitions: Students will start out at their desks for the beginning of the lesson to go over the video and watch the Brain Pop video and the PowerPoint. Once all of the students have filled in the blanks while reading over the PowerPoint, the students will be permitted to cut and glue their lap book together and share their finished lap book with the rest of the class.

10. Closure: When the students complete their lap book with all the information about the Legislative branch, they can share their book with the rest of the class. By allowing the students to share their work, it will give them the opportunity to practice explaining their thinking and speaking in front of the class. The completed lap books will allow the students to have all of their information in one place and serve as an organizer for each student. At the end of the lesson, the students will write two sentences using vocabulary terms from both of the Legislative branch lessons.
