Ore City ISD School Health Advisory Council Minutes from April 7, 2017

The Ore City ISD SHAC met on Thursday, April 6, 2017, at 4:00pm in the Board Room. Those present included: Mindy Hamilton, Selenia Cato, Yvette Dauster, Rita Clawson, Donna Denton, Nicole Arnold, Lynn Heflin, Rachel Perez, and Ray Deason. Meeting agenda and minutes from the previous meeting on February 16, 2017, were handed out and reviewed.

 The SHAC Year in Review 2016-2017 report was reviewed by the committee. This report will be submitted to the School Board.

 The annual OCISD staff blood screening was conducted on April 5 at the MS/HS Library. Nineteen employees participated.

 Clawson reported that the High School StuCo had hosted 5 blood drives this year. The last one was held on April 3 where 21 people donated.

 Million Mile Month will be a focus during the month of April. Million Mile Month encourages people across the nation to get active. 183 OCISD staff and students, as well as community members, are taking part in this campaign again this year and have registered and begun logging their activity. Each campus has chosen to participate in different ways: Elementary will incorporate walking during PE classes. Middle School staff and students will walk the track on Mondays and Fridays during advisory, emphasizing physical fitness as part of Mondays' character ed. For every 20 miles that teachers log, they will receive a jeans pass. High School teachers will find a way to incorporate walking into a lesson plan during the month of April. Also, for every 20 miles that teachers log, they will receive a jeans pass. Leaders on the Leaderboard will be announced each Friday.

 Tyler Junior College Dental Department along with UT Health Northeast will be offering dental exams, cleanings and sealants to OC students for free on April 21. Information will be sent to parents concerning registering for this service.

 The annual Spring Immunization Clinic’s date has been set tentatively for May 2, 2017. Students entering Pre-K, Kindergarten, 7th grade, and college will be encouraged to get state-required vaccines for the upcoming school year.

 Clawson announced that the annual Crush Cancer 5K has been set for Saturday, May 20, 2017. It will cost $25 to register. This will include a T-shirt if received by May 10. Participants can choose to walk/run the track or walk/run the city route. StuCo is also seeking sponsorships for the event. Individuals can sponsor for $20, and businesses can sponsor for $50.

 This was the last SHAC meeting for the 2016-2017 school year.
