AW P2 Frogcall 135 February 2015 FROM RAGS TO RICHES AND BACK AGAIN: FLUCTUATIONS IN THE GREEN AND GOLDEN BELL FROG LITORIA AUREA POPULATION AT NOWRA ON THE SOUTH COAST OF NEW SOUTH WALES bstract: Systematic (time constrained) and targeted Asurveys were conducted from 1996-2014 for the green and golden bell frog Litoria aurea on the Crookhaven River floodplain, east of Nowra on the south coast of New South Wales. In April 2008, a large number of metamorphlings were observed at Brundee Swamp Nature Reserve. A management plan for the Crookhaven population of L. aurea was prepared by the author for the Department of Conservation (DEC 2008). Data on this population has expanded considerably over the last six years and the plan requires updating. Outside the Reservation system the management of the Crookhaven population of L. aurea has been reactionary. We observed a female-biased sexual size di- morphism, but no differences in age parameters between the two sexes. Growth rate is accelerated during the first year of life, both before and after metamorphosis, followed by a rapid sexual maturation and a short lifespan. Both males and fe- males reached sexual maturity before they were one year old, the mean age was two years, and longevity was low for both sexes, with only 2% of the tested individuals, all females, reaching the age of four years.

JENKINS Abstract The unequal distribution of legal protections on endangered species has been attributed to the “charisma” and “cuteness” of protected species. However, the theory of kin selection, which predicts the genetic relationship between organisms is proportional to the amount of cooperation between them, offers an evolutionary explanation for this phenomenon. In this thesis, it was hypothesized if the unequal distribution of legal protections on endangered species is a result of kin selection, then the genetic similarity between a species and Homo sapiens is proportional to the legal protections on that species.

Drei der Gebiete (Déré, Diécké, Mont Béro) wurden im Rahmen eines kürzlich von Conservation International organisierten "Rapid Assessment Program" (RAP) untersucht. Für die übrigen drei Gebiete (Nimba Berge, Ziama, Pic de Fon) werteten wir Literaturdaten aus und untersuchten Belegexemplare in der Sammlung des Museums Koenig in Bonn (ZFMK). Insgesamt listen wir 73 für Südostguinea nachgewiesene Amphibienarten auf. Die Anzahl der pro Gebiet nachgewiesenen Arten reichte von 29 bis 58. Der Prozentsatz, der für Oberguinea endemischen Arten (insgesamt 39) pro Gebiet, schwankte von 42 bis 53 %. Einige Arten werden von uns detaillierter diskutiert. Der hohe Anteil von Störungsanzeigern (farmbush species) in allen untersuchten Gebieten ist ein untrügliches Zeichen für die be- reits deutlich fortgeschrittene Walddegradation, am dramatischsten sichtbar in Déré. Wir unterstreichen die Bedeu- tung von Wald-Guinea als eines der artenreichsten Gebiete Afrikas und fordern nachdrücklich einen intensiveren Schutz der verbliebenen Wälder und eine gründliche Untersuchung der vielen endemischen Amphibienarten über die nahezu keine Daten verfügbar sind.

A small surviving population could be traced in the surroundings of the type locality Mount Alpha, Liberia. The type locality was meanwhile destroyed by open cast mining. Similar to the Guinean Nimba toad, Nimbaphrynoides occidentalis, the Liberian toad lives exclusively in open, savanna like habitats above 1200 m a.s.l. Portik* and Theodore J. Papenfuss Abstract Background: The Arabian Peninsula is home to a unique fauna that has assembled and evolved throughout the course of major geophysical events, including the separation of the Arabian Plate from Africa and subsequent collision with Eurasia. Opportunities for faunal exchanges with particular continents occurred in temporally distinct periods, and the presence of African, Western Eurasian, and South Asian derived taxa on the Arabian Peninsula signifies the complexity of these historical biogeographic events. The six true toad species (family Bufonidae) endemic to the Arabian Peninsula present a considerable taxonomic and biogeographic challenge because they are part of a global bufonid radiation, including several genera surrounding the Arabian Peninsula, and difficult to discriminate morphologically. As they could be derived from African, Western Eurasian, or South Asian toad groups, elucidating their evolutionary relationships has important implications for historical biogeography. Here, we analyze a global molecular data set of 243 bufonid lineages, with an emphasis on new sampling from the Horn of Africa, Western Eurasia, South Asia, and the Arabian Peninsula, to reconstruct the evolutionary relationships of the Arabian species. We produce a robust time-calibrated phylogeny to infer the biogeographic history of this group on and around the Arabian Peninsula. Results: Our phylogenetic analyses indicate two of the endemic Arabian toad species, “Bufo” tihamicus and “Bufo” arabicus, evolved independently within the African genus Amietophrynus.
