This weekly e-mail highlights interesting internship opportunities and other important information that will aid you in securing an internship! The internships listed below are just a sampling of what is available. For complete listings of all current internships, log on to connectSC at http://careers.usc.edu. TWO DAYS LEFT TO RECEIVE COURSE CREDIT FOR UNPAID INTERNSHIP The last day to register for an internship course is this Friday, September 10th. If you need course credit for an unpaid internship register TODAY!

Federal labor law requires that students participating in an internship must either A) be paid by the employer; or, B) be enrolled in an internship for-credit course. Do you have an unpaid internship and need course credit? If so, register for one of USC’s 10+ internship courses. The Career Center instructs an internship course, MDA 250. For a full list of internship courses offered visit the Career Center’s website, http://careers.usc.edu or stop by our office in STU B1.

F-1 international students participating in a paid internship are required to receive Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorization from OIS which requires enrolling in an internship course at USC. F-1 international students participating in an unpaid internship should contact OIS for more details regarding work authorization requirements.

FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENT MENTOR PROGRAM Are you the first in your family to attend college? Would you like to enter into a mentorship with an alumnus who was also the first in their family to attend college? The Career Planning & Placement Center invites you to participate in our First Generation College Student Mentor Program. This program will provide “real world” exposure to the working world through a mentorship that focuses on professional and career development. Students will be paired with USC alumni who also are first generation college students. If you are interested in participating in this mentor program please download and complete an application at http://careers.usc.edu/students/internships/first-generation-college-student-mentor- program/. Completed applications must be turned in to the Career Planning & Placement Center Internship Programs office by 5:00 pm on September 17, 2010.

DIVERSITY NETWORKING MIXER The Career Planning & Placement Center (CPPC) invites you to attend our fall Diversity Networking Mixer on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 from 6-8pm in our CPPC Lounge (STU 110). We are committed to facilitating an understanding and appreciation of diversity within the Trojan community. Robert Siegel Ceramics – Design/Marketing Assistant Looking for someone 10-15 hrs. a week to help in my studio, a hardworking and motivated individual with an interest in graphic design, branding, and marketing. I am looking for someone well versed in Photoshop, illustrator and related programs. Which could include: designing and creating marketing materials for the web and print, managing google adword and facebook campaigns, blogging, research and administrative duties and the potential to get involved in the porcelain making process itself. . Border Stylo – Engineering Intern (6 Openings) Border Stylo is looking for Graduate-student Engineering Interns! Engineering Interns will gain valuable experience by working on our flagship product, Glass. Interns will work directly with Sr. Engineers, while interfacing with VPs on a regular basis. This is a great opportunity to work within a group of passionate developers on new problems, while contributing to the making of a product. Interns will get the chance to work with different teams within the Engineering Department. Engineering Interns will have the opportunity for their work to be displayed to both the Border Stylo team and the Glass user base. Intern will write code that meets specifications. Develop software applications and tools. Implement activities that generally impact discrete components / processes of the work of own unit / team / projects. Effectively resolve problems and roadblocks as they occur. Receive work in the form of short-term assignments that often require the application of independent judgment. Work is subject to regular supervisory review at regular intervals. Operate within the context of approved methods. Demonstrate proficiency in several areas of Web-based application development. Have working knowledge of programming languages important to the organization and C, C++, or Java; knowledgeable about Linux-based systems. Familiarity with at least one "dynamic language," such as Ruby or Python. Knowledge in web technologies, including HTTP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript. The ideal candidate will also have server-side knowledge of a language such as Ruby, Erlang, or Python, in combination with skills in C/C++ or Java. Technically candidates should have knowledge of client-side Web technologies, including Ajax, JavaScript, CSS, and HTML, across all major browser platforms. Experience working with working with relational databases (ex: Postgres, MySQL), document databases (ex: CouchDB) or distributed hash-based solutions (ex: MongoDB, Cassandra, Tokyo Cabinet) is helpful. . Southern California Earthquake Center – Education Program Assistant ($10-12/hr) The Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) at USC is seeking to hire an USC student to assist with a variety of tasks including the development and distribution of educational products related to K-12 earthquake education. The assistant will communicate with educators, such as scheduling teacher workshops and providing materials. In addition, the assistant will prepare equipment and supplies for classroom experiences, and conduct educator training activities (at USC and other locations in the LA area). Applicants should be UNDERGRADUATE students in science, engineering, or education. (Graduate students in Education or Earth Science will also be considered.) Students with work study are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have strong interpersonal and communication skills. UNPAID INTERNSHIPS . Tongal – Social Media Intern (2 Openings) Tongal.com is a platform that facilitates the creation of content via crowdsourcing. We have members from all over the world who collaborate to create content, of all kinds, for companies and organizations. We are seeking interns interested in content development, new media, advertising and marketing to help us grow our community and continue to expand and develop our capabilities. Must be social media savvy. We want candidates who know how to use social media well, appropriately and in a professional manner (ie - Facebook & Twitter). Must be able to write clearly and concisely. You must be able to prove that you will receive academic credit for this internship by enrolling in an Internship Class at USC. . E-MC2 – Marketing Intern The largest state association of retail jewelers and suppliers in the United States is looking for an intern to aid in marketing duties. Launching in 2010, the association is currently creating a new website that will have a large range of capabilities as well as features to the site. We are looking for an intern to work part-time, about 15 - 25 hours per week (between 10AM – 8PM Mon – Fri, negotiable), in our office for approximately one school semester. As an intern, you will be responsible for copywriting, market research, administrative duties as well as being an active participant in the overall marketing goals. From this internship, it is guaranteed you will acquire hands on experience in the fast paced world of marketing and the jewelry industry. Duties will include, but are not limited to: Social media, Blog writing, Small business administration, Online advertising, Membership development, Market Research, General administrative duties and Copywriting. . KUSC – Internships Interns at KUSC enjoy a wide variety of hands-on experience. In workshop and in on-the-job settings, they learn digital editing, writing for broadcast, choosing soundbites, interview techniques, and producing radio features. All of these skills are immediately adaptable to news and information formats, as well as the classical/arts context at KUSC. Interns help prepare and run live concert broadcasts, and learn music programming strategies. They work side-by-side with seasoned professionals. At KUSC, interns report to KUSC Program Director, Gail Eichenthal, whose 30 years of experience in radio includes 12 years at CBS News and KNX Newsradio, as well as serving as host and producer of the LA Philharmonic’s national radio broadcasts for more than two decades. Interns become part of the production team that produces the weekly arts magazine program Arts Alive, and the daily Spotlight on the Arts, as well as occasional specials and documentaries. Following their work at KUSC, former Interns have been accepted at such prestigious programs as the the graduate program at USC’s Annenberg School, Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, and professional work in cable and network television, website production, Sony Entertainment, and public radio. For prospective interns: a love of the arts is preferable and an appreciation of classical music is a plus, but not necessary. Demand Media – New Media Intern Do you lie awake at night wondering how you’ll be able to use your journalism, communications, or English degree in a rapidly changing industry? Do you secretly wish you could turn your obsession with Facebook into an actual career? Do you want to learn the ins and outs of online publishing, but don’t know where to start? You’re in luck: Demand Media, one of the fastest-growing social media companies in the industry, is seeking six interns to work out of our Santa Monica office for the fall quarter. Our internship program is highly structured, with an emphasis on education. Demand Media interns walk away with a polished resume and working knowledge of HTML, Photoshop, Search Engine Optimization, Google Analytics and social media strategies. Special Events Intern - The L.A. LIVE Special Events Internship provides qualified college students the opportunity to gain access and insight into the highly competitive world of sales and events, while assisting the sales department and event coordinator in a variety of ways. Each intern will build valuable career experiences as they assist the department in its efforts to maintain a high level of consistency, accuracy, client satisfaction and follow-through so that our events are executed successfully.
