EVACUATION OF THE POOL

 On fir alarm / evacuation alarm OR  Whistle system: -  1 short blast of the whistle stop activity, LOOK & LISTEN  1 long blast of the whistle - CLEAR THE POOL

Swimming teacher Responsibilities

ON HEARING THE EVACUATION ALARM

 Stop activity  Get all swimmers out of the pool and ask them to sit against the wall at their meeting point (were the register was taken at the start of the lesson – as this is their swimming area)  Supervise class but remain on poolside until told otherwise by myself (Roxane) or other designated person.  Explain to class what is happening  If LANE swimming - then all pupils to exit the water at their nearest point, make their way to the nearest exit, then sit against wall and wait for their teacher to take the register  All teachers to take a register and do a head count.

ON BEING TOLD TO EVACUATE

 All swimmers will be move to evacuation point as a group with their teacher supervising class  Then followed by any parents on poolside, with the child towel which should have been brought to poolside.  Teachers are to have with them their class register, and register along with head count taken again at the evacuation point.  Children to be kept in a group with their teacher until their parents arrives & are identified  The evacuation point as stated in the EAP or that given via the Caretaker on Duty for the school  No person is to go form poolside back into the changing rooms  The changing rooms will be evacuated on the alarm, by nearest exit & Roxane or designated person will check that all changing rooms have been cleared  No one is to re-enter the building until told to do so, in the case of West Hatch, will be the caretaker on duty.

If the pool phone is not in use to outside hires (as the like of us) then own mobile phone, always to be at hand on the site, with a back up phone via a nominated teacher or admin person. Serious Injury to a Swimmer

 Put into action whistle system  Life guard to respond to the incident  Roxane to clear the pool or other designated person  Pupils to go to their teacher - and takes them to the changing room to waiting parents and ask for them to wait there  Roxane to provide assistance or other designated person  Assessing the incident / injury  Roxane or designated person to call an ambulance by dialling 999 and relay the following information

Give the nature of the injury (e.g. suspected spinal injury)

A designated person then is to wait by the school entrance to meet the paramedics and take them to the scene of the incident

AFTER THE INCIDENT - REPORT THE INCIDENT - RIDDOR

Minor emergency - Poolside

Life guard to assess / carry out minor first aid (non emergency) Also place in incident book.
