Colby College Archaeology in the Americas

Colby College -- Archaeology in the Americas Elfrieda Frank Scholars: Field School Summer Grant Program

The grant program covers tuition and related expenses for students seeking to enroll in a summer archaeological field school. The grant also provides a stipend to cover living expenses not included in program fees and to offset potential lost summer wages. Eligible field schools are limited to those supporting archaeological research in the Americas, with preference given to programs focused on Native American sites (including North, South, and Central America). This program is made possible by a generous grant from the Elfrieda Frank Foundation. All Colby students are eligible to apply (please note: graduating seniors are eligible but will be funded only after other applications are considered). A selection committee will review all applications to determine feasibility and appropriate funding. The number of grants available is limited and not all applicants may be funded. If you are applying for a field school experience of 4 weeks or longer, please note that proposed budgeted expenses (program cost + travel) that exceed $5000 will need to be thoroughly justified and may not be fully funded; for programs of 1-3 weeks, the same restrictions will apply to proposed budgets exceeding $3000.

The Application Process E-mail all materials with subject heading “Archaeology Grant Application” to: [email protected]. Completed applications must be received by noon, February 20, 2017.

To apply for the Field School Summer Grant Program you must submit the following: 1. A statement of interest: Describe your interest in learning about archaeology and archaeological methods. Discuss how your interest in archaeology relates to your overall academic program at Colby and include relevant coursework you have completed or in which you are currently enrolled. If relevant, please describe any previous experience in the field of archaeology and indicate future career interests and/or goals for which this opportunity would be beneficial. Explain your interest in the particular field school(s) to which you wish to apply and how it fits with your own interests and goals. (Students will be supported for only one field school experience; however, given that some schools fill up early, you may wish to select up to two schools as alternates. If you include more than one field school in your application, please rank them in order of preference and provide a separate budget for each – see instructions below.)

2. An updated resume or CV and an informal transcript of your academic record.

3. Identify the specific field school(s) to which you plan to apply. Include a URL link to the relevant home page/website(s) of the program(s). Clearly indicate the application deadlines for the relevant field school(s). You must also indicate the specific starting and ending dates of the program. Note: You will be responsible for making the necessary application and fulfilling all requirements for enrollment in the field school. Remember, eligible field schools are limited to those conducting archaeological research in the Americas (North, Central, South).

4. A budget to include the following items (NOTE: programs for which fees/housing/travel exceed $5000 for 4+ weeks or $3000 for 1-3 weeks may not be fully funded): a. Tuition and related expenses charged by the field school and/or its host university or college; b. Necessary travel expenses to and from your home to the field school; c. Housing expenses, if not covered by field school fees; d. Also, clearly state the number of weeks you expect to be enrolled in the field school -- this will be used to determine the appropriate stipend for the grant. (Stipends are intended to cover expenses including food, local transportation, laundry, books, as well as to replace lost wages from summer employment.)

5. One letter of recommendation from a Colby faculty member (this can be sent separately by the recommender; e-mail submission to: [email protected]).

NOTE: By applying for and accepting (if offered) an Elfrieda Frank Field School Summer Grant, you agree to write a report that will be made available to the donor.
