In Memory of Clifford Antone and Jaxon The South Austin Museum of Popular Culture presents: Visual Flights of Fancy : a retrospective look at the artwork of Danny Garrett

Austin, Texas June 12, 2006:

An artist’s reception for Visual Flights of Fancy: a retrospective look at the artwork of Danny Garrett will be hosted at the South Austin Museum of Popular Culture on Saturday, June 24, 2006 beginning at 7:09pm. Danny is dedicating the musical pieces in his show to the memory of his friend and patron, Clifford Antone. Many of the original art board drawings, commissioned by Clifford for Antone’s nightclub will be on display, several signed by the performing musicians, including rarely-seen portraits of Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, James Cotton and Maceo Parker. The remainder of the show Danny would like to dedicate to his friend and colleague, Jack Jackson. Danny is flying in from Auckland, New Zealand and will be present at this reception. In addition to the music art there are many other pieces that include portraiture, landscapes and florals. Danny is probably best known for his pen and ink work and fellow poster artist and former studio mate, Frank Kozik summed up Danny’s style simply, “Garrett is a stiplin’ fool. No projector, nuthin. Stipplin’ old school style. Lettering too.” In addition to fine line and dot work, the museum is presenting a number of never-before seen oil and acrylic paintings, oil crayon renderings as well as a collection of mixed-media pieces. One of Danny’s most widely recognized pieces, Willie Nelson as Uncle Sam “I Want You For My Fourth of July Picnic” shows off his brush-stroke versatility in painting. For the Visual Flights of Fancy exhibit, a limited edition of fine art canvas prints of his seminal version of Willie Nelson as Uncle Sam will be available. Danny Garrett was born in Dodge City, Kansas in 1945. Raised on the Texas Gulf Coast, he began his education studying finance at the University of Houston, graduating from Stephen F. Austin University in 1968 with a B.A. in History. Drafted a month later, he served his country in Viet Nam during 1969 -1970. Upon his return to a world that had changed as profoundly as he, Danny found his way to Austin. In January 2005, Danny immigrated to New Zealand, where he currently lectures in the Art and Design Department of Auckland University of Technology. Danny Garrett’s Visual Flights of Fancy runs from June 17 to July 23, 2006.
