The Breakthrough Physics Prizes celebrate the achievements of scientists, physicists and » mathematicians who help us understand our world and shape our future. 2018 Gary Hinshaw Professor, Physics and Astronomy Dr. Gary Hinshaw is one of 26 scientists — including UBC physics and astronomy colleague Mark Halpern — behind the NASA satellite Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). The team received the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for helping to capture a “baby picture of the universe.” The publications stemming from their work are among the most highly cited physics and astronomy papers ever published. Hinshaw was one of five team leaders of the WMAP team, which was recognized for accurate measurements of several key cosmological parameters, including the age of the universe at 13.77 billion years; the fact that more than 95 per cent of the energy in the universe resides in the form of dark matter and dark energy; and the notion that our universe likely began with a burst of “cosmic inflation.” Other recent awards: • Royal Society of Canada, Fellow, 2017 4 winning scholarship 2018 breakthrough prize in fundamental physics 5 2017 Rashid Sumaila Professor, Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, and School of Public Policy and Global Affairs Dr. Rashid Sumaila is one of the world’s most innovative researchers on the future of the oceans, integrating social and economic dimensions with ecology, law, fisheries science and traditional knowledge to build
