By completing this task students will be able to:
Be aware of important dates for the year ahead. Understand the links between important dates and their Action Plan. Formulate a personal calendar of career events. Understand the link between these activities and applications and selection process.
Preparation and Materials
Copies of Info Sheet and Activity Sheets (1) and (2) “Calendar For The Year” for each student. A set of Calendar Event Cards for each small group. Program of careers lessons/events for grade 11.
Method
1. Put the students into groups of 3 to 4. 2. Explain the aims of the lesson using the learning outcomes on the Info Sheet. 3. Recap on work done during the previous year, emphasising that students need to know about themselves and the opportunities available post-16. 4. Go through the coming years program and explain how the events in grade 11 relate to their Action Plan. 5. Give out the sets of cards and Activity Sheets (1) and (2) to each group. 6. Identify fixed points e.g. Parents’ evenings, college open days etc. 7. Ask the groups to discuss what information from the cards they can put on their calendars. Also ask each student to produce their own calendar to suit their needs. 8. Ask for feedback from groups and individuals and invite sharing of new additions to the calendars. 9. Ensure that students are aware of links with their Action Plan such as:
Entering possible grades. Work experience review if appropriate. Discussing ideas with family/friends. Researching career ideas. Interview with a careers adviser.
10. Ask the students what they have learned from the lesson. 11. Summarise the main learning outcomes. Learning Outcomes: By completing this task you will be able to:

This lesson will enable you to consider the key elements in 1 Grade 11, which relate to career planning.
When you have made your own calendar for the year, make 2 notes about where it links to your Action Plan.
e.g.
