PULLIAM, SR., FOR HIS MORE 12 THAN THIRTY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE 13 SC SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AND THE BLIND AND TO 14 WISH HIM ALL THE BEST AS HE CONTINUES TO SERVE. 15 16 Whereas, Norman F. Pulliam’s commitment to the SC School for 17 the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB) and its fundraising arm, the 18 Walker Foundation, spans more than thirty years. Working 19 tirelessly since 1986 to improve the lives of SCSDB students, he 20 served as a member of the SCSDB Board of Commissioners from 21 1986 to 2006 (chair, 19932006), and he currently is completing a 22 tenyear tenure as a member of the Walker Foundation Board of 23 Trustees; and 24 25 Whereas, under his leadership at SCSDB, the school made many 26 substantial strides in advancing the mission of the school. Mr. 27 Pulliam led significant legislative initiatives to benefit SCSDB’s 28 students and staff and spearheaded efforts toward achieving 29 SCSDB’s recognition as an outstanding school by multiple 30 educational, advocacy, and historicpreservation organizations. His 31 watch witnessed substantial facility improvements, including the 32 complete renovation of Walker Hall; greater funding from public, 33 private, and corporate sources; significantly improved school 34 technology, accessibility, and safety; and expanded outreach 35 services and statewide partnerships; and 36 37 Whereas, further, in 2006 Mr. Pulliam established the SCSDB 38 Norman F. Pulliam Scholarship Award, given annually to three 39 graduates of the school to help advance their education. For his 40 outstanding service to SCSDB, in 2007 he was awarded the South 41 Carolina Federation of the Blind Distinguished Service Award; 42 and

[4992] 2 1 2 Whereas, in addition to his work in support of SCSDB, Mr. 3 Pulliam served as cochairman of the Spartanburg Development 4 Council Board of Directors and was a part of the Spartanburg Area 5 Chamber of Commerce. He is a past chairman of the Piedmont 6 Chapter of the American Red Cross, past president of the 7 Spartanburg Boys Home, and a director of the Board of 8 Spartanburg Girls Home; and 9 10 Whereas, he serves as a commissioner from the Upstate for the 11 South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, where he is one 12 of the state’s strongest advocates for protecting South Carolina’s 13 natural resources through land conservation; and 14 15 Whereas, in preparation for his career, Norman F. Pulliam, Sr., 16 graduated in 1964 from Clemson University, where he was winner 17 of the coveted Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. He received an 18 MBA from Harvard University in 1967; and 19 20 Whereas, he served as president of Pulliam Investment from 1970 21 to 1999, when he was elected board chairman. He now serves as 22 chairman emeritus. He has extensive real estate experience and has 23 developed, owned, and managed real estate valued at almost five 24 hundred million dollars. To provide the same opportunities to the 25 younger generation, Mr. Pulliam bestowed the endowment and gift 26 for the Clemson Master of Real Estate Development program; and 27 28 Whereas, in recognition of his service, in 1985 Mr. Pulliam was 29 awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian 30 honor. In 1996, he was named Philanthropist of the Year by the 31 Piedmont Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, 32 and in 2015 he received the Clemson Alumni Association 33 Distinguished Service Award; and 34 35 Whereas, grateful for the legacy of consistent commitment and 36 excellence Norman Pulliam has bestowed on this great State, the 37 General Assembly takes great pleasure in commending him and 38 wishing him continued success in the days ahead. Now, therefore, 39 40 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 41 concurring: 42

Pulliam, Sr., for his more than thirty 3 years of dedicated service to the SC School for the Deaf and the 4 Blind and wish him all the best as he continues to serve. 5 6 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 7 Norman F.
