SPAL 2104 Outdoor Skills and Leadership

Meeting room: Multiversity

Our meeting classroom is the multiversity, BUT, please be prepared to go outside every week in all weather. There may be some weeks that take place in the classroom or partially in the classroom, but we do need to have the flexibility to be comfortable outside for skill practice throughout the course.

Sept 15 - group building interpersonal activities Sept 22 - exploring our outdoor campus random acts of kindness assignment Sept 29 - principles of thermo-regulation; outdoor clothing; intro to tarp shelters and knots Oct 6 - review of shelters; 3 new knots; principles of combustion and firebuilding; camp stove use; camp hygiene systems and water purification Oct 13 - fitting and packing a pack; intro to map and compass Oct 20 - map and compass continued; route planning Oct 26 - trail nutrition; meal planning and packing; cooking Nov 3 In class practical exam* Nov 10 - expedition leadership, behavior and judgment (OCC Field Leader Hiking course) Nov 17 - Trip planning and emergency plans (OCC Field Leader Hiking course) Nov 24 OCC course and certification exam Dec 1 Reflect, debrief, celebrate

Marks:

Participatory Leadership: 30% Ongoing assessment (This mark will be based on attendance and the Expedition Leadership rubric)

Mid term practical skills exam: 30% NOVEMBER 3rd in class

Expedition Planning assignment: 30% DUE NOVEMBER 24th

OCC certification exam 10% November 17th
