TO: Elementary & Charter School Principals

RE: 2014-2015 Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Building Facilitators

In the context of facilitating MTSS, Task Team members have identified a need for common understanding and consistency across schools within the district. In order to ameliorate this concern we will revise the MTSS Guide to reflect new research and learning; work with Performance Matters to build a new platform in which MTSS processes will be documented; provide training for school leaders, psychologists, guidance counselors, and staffers; and ask principals to identify a person to facilitate the MTSS process at each building. As you select the person for this key role, please keep in mind the facilitator will assist you and your staff in understanding the MTSS process, with the goal of improving student achievement.

Listed below, you will find the characteristics of an ideal MTSS Facilitator, as identified by MTSS Task Team members. Please consider these characteristics as you select the person who will facilitate the process at your school. 1. Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills:

a. Active and attentive listening

b. Able to maintain organization

c. Able to question and empathize with team

d. Manages time well

e. Supports stakeholders’ efforts in completing requirements of the MTSS process

f. Respected by the staff

2. Monitors and tracks multiple sources and types of data to facilitate analysis at all levels:

a. School, Grade Level, Class and Individual data

b. Core, Supplemental and Intensive data

3. Facilitates effective team-based collaborative planning and problem-solving processes:

a. Creates agendas and schedules for data meetings

b. Maintains minutes for individual student records

c. Responsible for disseminating, monitoring and documenting the problem solving process

d. Serves as a “bridge” between teachers and the Individual Problem Solving Team (IPST) 4. Resourceful – ability to seek out academic and behavioral resources to meet student needs.

5. Facilitates and supports leadership to implement and sustain a strong MTSS Infrastructure:

a. Progress monitors the impact of the infrastructure on staff and student performance

6. Provides continuous Professional Development:

a. Serves as the MTSS point of contact for the district

b. Attends professional development

c. Comfortable with presenting and ability to facilitate staff professional development

d. Monitors the staff awareness to guide professional development decisions

There will be eight MTSS Facilitator meetings that are scheduled during the 2014-15 school year. The focus of these meetings will be to train facilitators to support school-wide efforts in the problem-solving process using the data based decision making model.

These workshops have been set up in ProGOE2. To access ProGOE2, log into the BPS website>Staff>Software/Applications>ProGOE2. Then search by “RtI” or Course #10667. Teachers may contact their Site Inservice Representatives who was trained on ProGOE2 for assistance with registration.

Please select one Multi-Tiered Systems of Support person to attend the MTSS Facilitator meetings. It is recommended that this person have an MTSS background with the capability and willingness to share the information back at the school with other staff in either large or small group team meetings.

Please complete the attached form and return it electronically by July 31, 2014 to Shelly Dickinson at [email protected] or Melissa Long at [email protected]. Participants will need to register in ProGOE2 and will be paid at the $12 per hour rate to attend the August 8 th meeting. A substitute verification form will be sent electronically to the school secretary for the remaining sessions.
