Course Overview CIS 110 ONLN3, ONLN4 & ONLN5 Computer Information Systems for Management (3 Credits) Spring 2015 - Marie Hartlein COURSE DESCRIPTION This course introduces non-computer science majors to the fundamentals of computer hardware, software and their integration into management information systems. Software covered in this course will include Microsoft Office 2013 (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and Windows. Additional topics include types of computers and their uses, the evaluation of computer hardware, using the Internet, networking, software integration and miscellaneous computer related topics. This course meets General Education Core Goal 2: Analytic Skills; Core Goal 4: Computer Fluency; and Core Goal 5: Information Literacy. Training will consist of on-line lectures/demonstrations, group discussions, step-by-step lab exercises from the textbook, SAM 2013 software training, weekly homework projects and the completion of student projects. A significant amount of self-study will be required in this course. In order to successfully complete this course, you must purchase the full textbook package and have Office 2013 (a Windows based software package) installed on your computer. Information on obtaining Office 2013 for free is posted under the Start Here area in Blackboard.  Windows 7 or Windows 8  SAM 2013 (included with textbook bundle)  At least two web browsers such as Firefox (preferred for using SAM2013), Internet Explorer or Chrome. Browser software can be downloaded for free via the Internet.

Since Office 2013 is Windows based and SAM 2013 runs best on Windows based system, it is better to complete the course using a PC rather than a MAC. However, students can complete the course on a MAC if you use a dual boot setup or a virtual machine. Refer to the FAQ document in the Read Me First section for more information.

LEARNING GOALS Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Identify and analyze the resources of a computer system including hardware, software, data and personnel, as used by individuals and in organizations. (Core Goal 4.1 and 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4) 2. Demonstrate the ability to use operating system features to manage applications, the file system and configuration changes. 3. Apply application software (word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation) and the Internet to solve business related problems. (Core Goal 4.2, 4.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 2.4, 5.1, and 5.2) 4. Examine ethical and privacy issues surrounding the use of computers and management information systems. (Core Goal 4.4 and 5.3-5.4) 5. Explain the need to coordinate managerial, financial, personnel, and equipment resources to produce effective information management. (Core Goal 5.5) COMMUNICATIONS Office Location: Second floor of the Advanced Technology Center – ATC 208 Telephone: 215-641-6315 e-mail: [email protected] or [email protected]

Office Hours:

Wednesday 9:15 a.m. – 12:15 a.m. (ATC 208)

Other times and days by appointment. Discussion group and e-mail are available 24 hours per day. I normally check e-mail at least one time per day Monday through Friday. I am teaching several sections of this course so please specify your section when asking a question via e-mail. If you want to speak with me in person, it is best to call my office during a time listed above. E-mail request received at 5 pm, will be answered the next business day. Therefore, questions sent on the night of the project due date will not be answered until the next morning. Do not wait until the due date to start your work! MEETING TIMES / LOCATION This is an asynchronous class which will allow you flexibility within the weekly framework to study and complete assignments at times convenient for you. Weekly lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and assignments will be posted in the Course Materials area of Blackboard. Blackboard can be access through the link on the MCCC Portal page or directly at http://courses.mc3.edu Your MCCC user id and password will be required.

Every Monday, you should check the content posted in the Course Materials folder for the current week. The first posting will outline the required assignments for the week, point values and due dates. Use this posting to plan your time schedule for the week and a checklist of the assignments that are due. Students who have less than 30 lab points accrued by the end of Week 2, will be reported as a “No Show” for the course.

The Help Forum discussion group will be available to you 24/7 for the purpose of interacting with the class and the instructor (posting questions, answers, helpful hints, etc.). Private communication will be available through e-mail, phone, and/or office visits. There will be one exam which will be administered at the Central or West campus. You will be able to take this exam any time the testing center is open during the scheduled test dates. You must reserve a time slot prior to taking the exam. Administrative details will also be posted 2 weeks preceding the exam and at that time, you can designate your Testing location. You will need to provide a USB drive for the exam. For grading and posting purposes, this assignment is referred to as the Midterm Exam, but it is actually taken about 2 weeks after the mid-point of the course. I recommend that you plan to take the exam early in the testing timeframe so you can reschedule in case you have a problem. The Final exam is a project that is completed at home. WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS and LATE ASSIGNMENTS Every student must complete the assignments posted in the Course Materials folder by the due date posted for that week. Assignments are posted by Sunday and are due at one minute before midnight (11:59 pm) on the date specified (generally the following Monday or Wednesday). Each lab is graded on a scale of 5-40 points depending on the level of complexity. Point values, assignment requirements and submission instructions will be included with the assignment posting. Assignments and quizzes must be submitted on time and via Blackboard / SAM (not e-mail) to receive full credit. I strongly recommend that you complete and submit homework at least one day in advance of the due date. This way, you will have some flexibility if you have a technical problem or need support. I understand that things in life happen - illness, technical issues, you forgot etc. Therefore, I will leave most Blackboard assignment and quiz links open for one week past the due date. If you submit an assignment past the due date, expect a 20% point grade reduction (i.e. -2 on a 10 point lab, -4 on a 20 point lab etc.) and a substantial grading delay. I grade late assignments as time permits so it may be several weeks later. After an assignment is past due for more than one week, the link to submit the assignment will be removed and the assignment can no longer be submitted for a grade. Exceptions: The Midterm Exam, SAM 2013 assignments and discussions must be submitted by the due date or you will not get credit. There are reasons for each.  SAM 2013 software requires a manual grade transfer to Blackboard.  The Midterm Exam requires a lot of coordination with the Testing Center.  Discussions are meant to be collaborative in nature. There is no sense making a contribution if no one is listening. GRADING: Grading Category % of Total Grade Midterm Exam 20% Final Exam (Final project completed at home) 20% Weekly Assignments – Projects, SAM work, Quizzes & Discussions 60%

Withdrawal: The last date to withdraw without an instructor signature is 3/19/2015. After that date, an instructor signature is required to withdraw. I will consider signing withdrawal requests through the College specified date of 4/4/2015. I will only sign withdrawal requests for students who are current, active class participants and have special circumstances. Be sure to contact me in advance of this deadline if you would like to discuss the option of a withdrawal with signature. WEX Withdrawal: After 4/4/2015, an Excused Withdrawal (“WEX”) due to medical, catastrophic or other circumstances beyond the student’s control must be requested through the STEM Division Dean with supporting documentation. A review of documentation for an Excused Withdrawal will occur by the Division Dean and a recommendation will be provided to the Provost’s Office.
