JLCC Reading Program – My Friend’s House Lesson Plan
Date:
Assigned Quick As A Cricket book: Team: Lead: Assistants:
Planned activities: 6:30 – 6:40 Gather children, introductions 6:40 – 6:50 Reading and discussion Discuss the title of the book. What do they think the book is about? Discuss parts of book (title, author, etc) and writing/reading directionally Read book once without stopping Discussion Topics Discuss how to describe people using character traits (i.e happy, strong) Discuss character traits which each child would use to describe themselves Ask children which animal they would like to be. Discuss how they feel sometimes (hungry as a bear, brave as a lion, quiet as a mouse) Emphasize the characteristics of each animal in the story that make it fit the description. Ask children to close their eyes and imagine the animal: how it moves (‘quick as a cricket’), what it looks like (‘sad as a basset’), how it feels (soft as a bunny) or how it behaves (mean as a shark) 6:50 – 7:00 Short activity (song or game) Re-read the book. Explain to the children that we will be acting out the story. Ask them to listen carefully as you read the story again. This time they should act out the animal movement as you read. GAME: Use animal patterns and place them all in a bag and let each child choose one. With the children seated in a circle, ask individuals to improvise movements that illustrate the phrases “quick as a cricket’ or ‘tough as a rhino’ – depending on the card they have. o Something to think about: Some descriptive phrases are more difficult to illustrate, as “large as a whale’ or ‘small as an ant’. Have the children brainstorm as a group for the possible movements. o Once everyone as had a turn, tell the children you will name a phrase. When you clap your hands and at that signal they can move to illustrate the phrase. When you clap again they need to freeze. o Select phrase in order at first, then at random. During circle time, pass a hand-held mirror around to each child. When the child receives the mirror, ask him to complete the sentence: It is neat to be me (as he looks in the mirror and says something he likes about himself)
7:00 – 7:30 Craft and additional activites Pass out drawing paper and pencils, crayons, etc. Ask the children which animal he is the most like and why. Have hi try to draw the animal (help if needed and let him color it in) and write “I’m as ______as a ______underneath the picture. You may want to paste this to the front or the back of their book to keep. Make paper bag puppets using animal cutouts. Have kids color cutouts and glue to top on bag.
7:30 – 7:45 Snack, clean up and goodbyes
