Purpose This unit standard is for people who work in the automotive refinishing industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to check the preparation of vehicle panels, and prepare and apply three layer pearl and two pack clearcoats.

3 Definitions Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements. Heavy vehicle refers to a motor vehicle that is of Class MD3, MD4, ME, NB, NC, TC or TD; or has a gross vehicle mass that exceeds 3500 kg and is not of a class specified in the Table of vehicle classes as listed from Land Transport New Zealand website http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/publications/infosheets/infosheet-1- 10.html#classes. Light vehicle refers to classes as listed from Land Transport New Zealand website table http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/publications/infosheets/infosheet-1- 10.html#classes: passenger vehicle MA, MB, MC; omnibus MD, MD1, MD2; and goods vehicle NA.

4 Range Assessment against this unit standard applies to painting a minimum of seven exterior panels on or from light or heavy vehicles.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Check the preparation of vehicle panels.

Performance criteria

1.1 Surface is checked for defects in accordance with company requirements.

Range sanding defects, repair defects, no missed sanding.

1.2 Masking is secure and smooth in accordance with company requirements.

Range no loose masking, remasking as necessary, all edges secure.

1.3 Surface is cleaned in accordance with company requirements.

Range solvent wash, blow off dust, tack off dust.

Element 2

Prepare and apply three layer pearl and two pack clearcoats.

Performance criteria

2.1 Paint materials and colour are identified and used in accordance with company requirements.

Range groundcoat, three layer pearl, two pack clearcoat, opacity; reducing, mixing ratios, matching, straining, measuring.

2.2 Spray gun is identified and used in accordance with company requirements.

Range gravity feed or suction feed; air pressure, air and fluid adjustment, set up.

2.3 Paint application requirements are identified and complied with in accordance with legislative requirements and manufacturer specifications.

Range personal safety; safety of other people; vehicle safety; workshop safety; environmental safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety; solvent, isocyanate and paint inhalation and absorption; spray booth.

2.4 Groundcoat is applied in accordance with company requirements.

2.5 Pearl coats are applied in accordance with company requirements.

2.6 Two pack clearcoats are applied in accordance with company requirements.

2.7 Paint is dried in accordance with company requirements.

Range force dried, chemical reaction.

2.8 The surface is checked and minor defects are rectified in accordance with company requirements.

Range surface is free of – dirt, runs, dryspray, orange peel, sink back.

2.9 Tools and equipment are cleaned and put away, and the work area is cleaned in accordance with company requirements.

2.10 Materials are stored in accordance with company requirements.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
