A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Dr. Sheldon Schiller. With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Dr. Sheldon Schiller, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul. WHEREAS, Sheldon Schiller was born on April 26, 1933, a native of Ontario, Canada, and longtime resident of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, and he traversed these earthly bounds on February 9, 2004; and WHEREAS, Sheldon Schiller was the loving son of the late Samuel Charles and Gertrude Winter Schiller; he was the devoted husband of 45 years to Denise Schiller; he was the loving father of Robert, Pamela, and Andrew; and he was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, Jonah, Kevin, Samuel, Katie, and Ethan; and WHEREAS, Sheldon Schiller graduated from the University of Toronto in 1954, and from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1960; he moved to Louisville in 1965, where he became a successful eye surgeon, and an associate professor for the University of Louisville Department of Ophthalmology, where he taught residents; and during his tenure with the University of Louisville, he innovated the use of phacoemulsification devices; and WHEREAS, Sheldon Schiller demonstrated his strong compassion for the underprivileged by contributing his time and talent to others through many medical missions to third world countries, and to impoverished areas in Guatemala, Guyana, and Romania; and WHEREAS, Sheldon Schiller was an avid and well-skilled Squash player; he twice represented the United States, in 1981 and 1985, at the World Maccabiah Games, also known as the Jewish Olympics, in Israel; and he returned to Israel in 1989 as chairman of the United States squash team, and again in 1993 as the masters squash chairman; and WHEREAS, in 1967, Sheldon Schiller founded "The Doctors Band," which was a volunteer 20 piece swing band made up entirely of physicians and medical students that

perform at local benefits, and at the time of his passing, Sheldon Schiller was leader of the band; and WHEREAS, the passing of Dr. Sheldon Schiller has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth; NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Dr. Sheldon Schiller, and extends to his family and many friends its most heartfelt sympathy. Dr. Sheldon Schiller brought to his community the enthusiasm and optimism he displayed throughout his life. Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Dr. Sheldon Schiller. Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Denise Schiller, 5807 Round Hill Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40222.
