JOHN GLANTZ & ALICE ELIZABETH (HELZER)

Many Germans left their homeland for the Volga River area of Russia between 1763 and 1767 in answer to an invitation to settle new lands. Many inducements and promises were made to the colonist. They became Russian citizens but retained their German heritage in their separate and isolated villages. Beginning in 1871 special colonist status began to erode and in 1874 almost all male colonists became eligible for military draft. The German colonists were given a 10- year grace period during which time they would have permission to emigrate. In December 1874 the first German conscripts were called up. To escape these deteriorating conditions in Czarist Russia, John Glanz (the "t" said to be added at an unknown immigration port) came to USA alone at age 18 leaving behind his entire family, including a twin sister named Katherine. No ship list yet found. (6) According to oral family history John Glantz arrived in 1876, the 1900 census of Hitchcock County, Nebraska says 1879. He sent for his brother Conrad and family in 1892 and brother William and family in 1900. On the 1880 census of Clay County, Nebraska a John Glansz is listed as a boarder in the household of Peter and E??? Yost. Oral family history says he laid ties for a railroad at Harvard and Sutton, Nebraska. John Glantz filed his intention to become a citizen in district court of Clay County, Nebraska on 9 December 1878.

He converted this to a Preemption on 26 January 1886 and the land was patented 21 July 1888. This land stayed in the family until approximately 1956 when his son William sold it. In 1982 it was owned by Ward and Lois McBee.
