WP: Carlos Vega (6-3): 7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K LP: Jordon West (5-4): 6.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K SV: Top Hitters: COC: Jorge Duarte 1-2 AWC: Landon Riker 2-2, R, 2 RBI, 2 2B, BB; Scooter Bynum 2-3, R, 2B

Game Notes:  Vega, the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Division I Pitcher of the Week, scattered five hits across his seven innings and didn’t allow a base runner to reach third base until the seventh inning. He struck out eight while only walking one as he improved to 6-3 on the year for Arizona Western.  The Matador offense started putting runners on base early, and the team broke through in the second inning. With two on and two outs, Landon Riker ripped a two-run double to put the Mats up 2-0. He finished the game 2-2 with a pair of doubles, two RBI, a run scored and a walk.  Vega didn’t need any more help, but his offense added two more runs in the fifth inning anyways. Riker led off with a walk and went to third on Scooter Bynum’s ground rule double to right center. Kainalu Pitoy sacrificed Riker home after hitting a fly ball to the warning track for a 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Zach Boehler beat out an infield chopper that took a high hop to short, and Bynum came home to make it 4-0.  Cochise threatened in the seventh inning and loaded the bases, but a groundout to Bobby Mena at short ended the game and gave Vega the shutout. vs. Cochise Game 2 R H E COC 1 5 2 AWC 4 7 0

Winning Pitcher: Brody Kato (4-2): 9.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K Losing Pitcher: Alex Tovalin (7-5): 6.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K Save: Top Hitters: 2016 BASEBALL MINI-BOX

COC: Jorge Duarte 2-3, RBI, 2B AWC: Franky Chavez 2-4, 2B; Bobby Mena 1-2, R, RBI, 2B, SB; Dom Rodriguez 1-3, R, RBI, 2B, Sac Bunt

Game Notes:  Kato grew stronger on the mound as the game went along. He scattered six hits across the nine innings, only allowed one run and never allowed Cochise to have multiple hits in a single inning. The freshman walked two while striking out seven. Four of his last six outs were K’s as he improved to 4-2 on the season.  In the second inning, Kato walked back-to-back batters with two outs, and Cochise’s Jorge Duarte knocked home a run with a single through the right side of the infield for a 1-0 lead.  Arizona Western immediately answered and retook the lead in the bottom of the second. Kato reached on an error at short. Carlos Higuera came in as a courtesy runner and stole second. Dom Rodriguez then ripped a liner that stayed fair down the left field line for a double that scored Higuera and tied the game. Mena hit a hot grounder in almost the exact same spot as Rodriguez, and his RBI double put the Mats up 2-1.  The score stayed there until late in the game as both pitchers settled into a duel. The Matadors struck again in the bottom of the seventh. Austin Maltby doubled and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rodriguez. After Mena was hit by a pitch, Cochise starter Alex Tovalin balked to score Maltby. Tovalin was pulled in favor of Juan Aguilera, and Mena went to third on a wild pitch from Aguilera. The throw to third went into the outfield and allowed Mena to score for a 4-1 lead.
