***************************************** EMI Music Sound Foundations Funding for Schools to Purchase Musical Equipment

Schools in the UK, that wish to purchase musical instruments and equipment can apply for funding of up to £2,000 through the EMI Music Sound Foundation’s Instrument and/or Equipment Awards.

To date the Foundations has made awards to over two thousand schools, individual students and teachers improve their access to music through the purchase or upgrade of musical instruments and equipment. The funding has to be made for music education that is beyond statutory national curriculum music teaching.

Examples of sponsored schools include All Saints School in Mansfield; Egglescliffe School in Stockton-on-Tees; and North Kesteven School in Lincoln.

***************************************** Sport England Funding Available to Improve Sports Facilities

1 Sport England has announced that the Inspired Facilities Fund is now open for applications. The Inspired Facilities Fund is part of the Places People Play programme which aims to deliver a mass participation sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Through Inspired Facilities, Sport England will award capital grants to refurbish and improve up to 1,000 community sports clubs.

The type of projects funded could include:  a sprung floor that converts an unused hall into a local multi-sport facility;  new changing rooms, so away teams no longer need to change in the car park; and  new floodlights that mean a facility can be used for many more hours of the day; etc.

Community and voluntary organisations, including sports clubs, parish and town councils can apply for grants worth between £20,000 and £50,000. At least 70% of the available funding available is set aside for these groups. The remaining money will be open to a wider group of organisations, including councils and schools, with grants of up to £150,000 available. If one of the groups benefitting from your planned project is disadvantaged young people aged under 18, you can apply for additional capital (to cover building costs) or revenue (day-to-day operating costs) funding from Thomas Cook Children’s Charity.

***************************************** DoE £10 Million Catch-Up Programme for Disadvantaged Pupils

The Department of Education has announced that a new £10 million programme to help children from poorer backgrounds who are behind in reading and writing at the end of primary school to get extra catch-up lessons is now open for applications. This is part of the Government’s drive to narrow the attainment gap between pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers.

The programme is run by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) which is inviting applications for innovative projects from schools, charities, local authorities and universities. The EEF is looking to fund a mix of projects beginning at the end of Year 6 (after KS2 assessments), in the summer between Year 6 and Year 7, and in Year 7 itself. Typically, the projects will be one-to-one or small-group interventions, though the EEF are also likely to fund a number of whole-class approaches.

Bids could include extra support such as:  small catch-up classes;  one-to-one tuition using innovative approaches; and  vouchers for literacy tuition that parents can spend.

***************************************** The British & Foreign Schools Society

The British & Foreign Schools Society (BFSS) which supports educational projects in the UK and around the world by funding schools, other charities and educational bodies, has announced that the next closing date for applications is the 26th September 2012.

The Society supports organisations that reach out to children in remote or impoverished areas, improving inclusivity in education and providing much-needed facilities. The Society normally makes grants for educational projects totaling about £400,000 in any one year. Although a few grants are made to individuals, the majority (85% of grants) are made to schools, other charities and educational bodies.

Previous projects supported include a grant of £10,000 to the Bloomfield Learning Centre. The Centre assesses and teaches 6 to 16 year olds with specific learning difficulties from areas of socio economic disadvantage in London. http://www.bfss.org.uk/grants/

***************************************** Daiwa Foundation Funding for Links with Japan

2 The Daiwa Foundation which supports closer links between Britain and Japan is seeking applications under its small grants programme. Grants of £3,000-£7,000 are available to individuals, societies, associations or other bodies in the UK or Japan to promote and support interaction between the two countries.

Daiwa Foundation Small Grants can cover all fields of activity, including educational and grassroots exchanges, research travel, the organisation of conferences, exhibitions, and other projects and events that fulfill this broad objective. New initiatives are especially encouraged. For example, in March 2012, Netherthong Primary School (West Yorkshire) received £5,000 for a week long school exchange visit to Japan by 15 Year 6 pupils to enhance links with its partner school Mioyoshigaoka Elementary School.

***************************************** Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards

The Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards Scheme provides one-off donations of between £500 and £4,000 to local projects that support children and their education and welfare, elderly people and adults and children with disabilities.

Previous projects supported have included part funding to purchase minibuses; befriending schemes; luncheon clubs; and day trips / social trips for elderly / disabled people; sensory garden or room projects; and outdoor classrooms. Past recipients include:  Addington High School – funding towards the development of an outdoor classroom;  The Spark Children’s Arts Festival – funding towards the construction of an outdoor play space; and

***************************************** Royal Bank of Scotland Community Cash Awards

Young people are being given the chance to claim a share of £1 million to help tackle the dangers of drugs, crime and play a positive role in their community. The Royal Bank of Scotland Community Cash Awards will see £1 million of grants being distributed by youth charity “The Prince’s Trust” to young people who want to run community projects in some of Britain’s poorest areas. The Awards, worth up to £3,000, are available to disadvantaged 14 to 25-year-olds who want to transform their area and learn practical skills.

Projects could range from improving local youth facilities to sex education workshops in schools. Projects must:  be run and managed by people between the ages of 14 and 25;  clearly benefit the local community;  benefit the people running the project; and  be a new or developing project.

Previous projects supported include an amateur boxing project to give young people greater confidence, and a media project to promote community cohesion and greater understanding between the local community and asylum seekers.

***************************************** Football Foundation Funding for 9 v 9 Goalposts

The Football Association (FA) has teamed up with the Football Foundation to provide funding towards the installation of 9v9 goalposts as part of The FA’s Youth Development Review, as well as continuing to replace unsafe goalposts. The new 9v9 format will become mandatory from the 2013/14 season. This will result in these clubs and leagues needing to purchase 16’ x 7’ goals over the next couple of months and in time for the start of the 2012/13 season.

Through this new funding scheme the Football Foundation is offering grants at 50% of the cost of British Standard 16’x 7’ goalposts, including delivery and VAT (if applicable). The grant scheme is open to clubs, leagues, local

3 authorities and schools (so long as there is community use of the facilities outside school hours). Applicants must discuss their goalpost requirements with the County FA to confirm eligibility.

***************************************** McDonald’s KickStart Grants

McDonald’s has announced that the next deadline for applications to its Kick Start Grants Programme is the 30th September 2012. The aim of the programme is to support community football throughout the UK. A total of £75,000 is available in 2012 through the McDonalds Kick Start scheme and local community football teams can apply for grants of between £500 and £2,500 for activities such as improving club facilities; grounds-keeping tools; training courses; pitch hire; van hire; and washing machines for kit; etc.

Individuals can apply for a grant on behalf of their club, as long as they are recognised by their national FA, and have at least one team at or below junior (U18) level. Applicants must be over 18 and involved with the club at some level, such as a coach, volunteer or parent.

For example, Stephen O’Hara has helped Camlough Rovers FC clean up their act by donating a brand new washing machine and tumble dryer to help wash the team kits week in week out. ***************************************** eLearning Foundation Launches New Funding Round

The eLearning Foundation has announced that schools can now apply for a grant from the e-Learning Foundation as part of their provision of 1:1 access. The funding is specifically to help schools share their data on student progress with the Foundation. To be eligible for funding schools need:  to hold a current affiliation with the e-Learning Foundation;  operate a 1:1 access to technology programme, or will do by the end of December 2012; and  are prepared to share their impact data with the Foundation.

The grants are worth £5,000 for Secondary Schools and £2,000 for Primary Schools. The Foundation also have some funding specifically restricted to schools in the following areas: Lambeth. Hackney, Westminster, Newcastle, Gateshead, Wiltshire and Suffolk.

For example, Cramlington Learning Village is a specialist Science and Vocational College in Northumberland. They chose the e-Learning Foundation to assist them to run their mobile device scheme. The scheme includes the introduction of the Samsung galaxy tablets – each student now has access to the Internet, the school VLE and all associated resources such as a digital camera, a web cam and a microphone.

***************************************** Educational Endowment Fund

The Education Endowment Fund (EEF) has announced that it is seeking applications from schools and other not for profit organisations for projects that address educational disadvantage. In particular, the Foundation is seeking to support projects that focus on innovations and on scaling up projects which have a measurable impact on attainment or a directly related outcome. As part of the EEF's grant funding agreement with the Department for Education they are required to target their funds for the first two years at children entitled to free school meals attending those schools which are not meeting the Government's floor targets for attainment and progression.

Projects run by schools and other not for profit organisations which fit within one of four broad approaches will be supported: 1. Testing and incubating new ideas which have a proof of concept 2. Bringing initiatives from other contexts to disadvantaged students and schools (this could include, for example, programmes from overseas or from the independent sector) 3. Scaling up initiatives which have been proven to work on a modest scale 4 4. Developing projects with potential that have not, to date, been delivered or evaluated effectively

The Foundations would typically expect their smallest grant to be in the order of £50,000 a year and to reach at least 100 students. The minimum grant will be £50,000.

***************************************** BBC Children in Need Small Grants Scheme

BBC Children in Need are inviting not-for-profit organisations (including registered charities, voluntary organisations, schools, local authorities, churches, social enterprises, community interest groups, universities etc) working with disadvantaged children and young people 18 years and under, living in the UK, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, to apply for grants of up to £10,000 through their small grants scheme. BBC Children in Need can only fund projects that focus on the differences made (outcomes) to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people. For this reason, when applying for a grant organisations must provide clear evidence that:  disadvantaged children and young people will be the primary beneficiaries of the project; and  experience positive changes in their lives from the activities or services you are providing.

BBC Children in Need aims to fund projects where a small amount can make a real contribution to the success of the project. Grants can be used to cover both, capital and revenue costs. There are four application deadlines in the year. Examples of projects that recently received funding include:  Colonel Frank Seely School in Nottingham which received £11, 560 – the project runs an after-school club for children and young people who are at risk of getting involved in anti-social behaviour or left alone while parents are working; and  Bushbury Nursery School in Wolverhampton which received a grant of £67,645 to develop and provide a series of Stay and Play sessions, a Toy library, and outreach work for children and their parents in the Bushbury area.

***************************************** Schools Grant Scheme to Promote Physics

UK schools and colleges catering for pupils in the age range 5-18 can apply for funding from the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council for small-scale projects or events linked to the teaching or promotion of physics. Projects linked to astronomy, space and particle physics are particularly encouraged.

Grants of up to £500 may contribute to costs such as running a science week activity, organising a visit to or from a working physicist, supply cover, transport, marketing and publicity, and materials/resources.

Previous projects to receive funding include:  St John’s High School for a Practical Rocketry workshop to design a water propelled rocket;  'Earth and space project': a grant was allocated to purchase a Skywatcher Skyliner 200p telescope; and  'Reach for the Stars': a grant allocated to primary and nursery schools in deprived areas to arrange for a science show company to take an extended assembly and hold three electricity workshops with a focus on the works of Newton and Galileo.

***************************************** Goldsmiths’ Grants for Teachers

The Goldsmiths’ Grant for Teachers is currently open for applications. The grant was introduced in 2008 to provide teachers and head teachers with an opportunity to take time out from the classroom in order to undertake an original project of their choice, in the UK or abroad, aimed at enhancing their personal and professional development. The grant, of up to £3,000, covers the cost of travel, accommodation, materials, etc. In addition the Company will pay a maximum of £2,000 supply cover to your school. Projects must have a long-term aim of disseminating results/research back to the school and/or wider audience.

5 Examples of projects that would be looked on favourably include comparisons of best practice in teaching and school administration at home or abroad; personal development projects – eg creative writing, arts, music, languages and coaching; and Study tours at home or abroad.

***************************************** Hampshire County Councillor Grants

Each County Councillor has a budget of £8,000 to be spent on local projects or initiatives in their electoral division. Potential applicants must contact their county councillor before applying for a grant. The scheme is open for 2012 and will close in February 2013.

Applications can be made by organisations and groups located within the administrative County of Hampshire, but the organisation or group must have:  A formal letter heading  Independently verified statements of accounts or at least, a formal letter from an independent person with the requisite ability and practical experience to carry out a competent examination of the accounts  A published statement of its objectives  A committee or board of governors or trustees  Minuted meetings and an annual general meeting

Applications will not be accepted from individuals (e.g. for personal sponsorship), however, an organisation that meets the criteria may apply for a grant on behalf of an individual member. Examples of organisations that could apply include: Parish Councils, Scout, Guide, Boys and Girls Brigades, local organisations, religious groups where the project will bring wider community benefit, village or community hall associations, parent teacher associations (formally constituted), organisations promoting the locality, nursery education groups, etc.

***************************************** Sportsmatch Grassroots Sports Funding

Sportsmatch, which is funded by Sport England to support the development of grassroots sport, has announced that it is now seeking applications for funding. Through the scheme, Sportsmatch offers pound for pound matched funding to investments made by businesses, trusts and individuals into projects that encourage sports participation at grass roots level. The funding available ranges from £1,000 to £100,000. The scheme is open to constituted not-for-profit organisations and statutory bodies. This might include sports clubs, voluntary organisations, local authorities, schools, universities or governing bodies of sport and priority is given to projects that benefit disability groups, black and minority ethnic groups and/or women and girls. Previous grant recipients include:  Devizes School, a secondary school and specialist sports college in Wiltshire. They obtained a three year sponsorship from a local construction firm, Gaiger Brothers, which amounted to £10,000 per year. The school matched this with a further £10,000 from Sportsmatch and were able to run an annual multi-sports coaching camp during the school summer holidays.  The Children's Kayak Charitable Trust obtained £1,180 in sponsorship from a local watersports retailer. They matched this with a Sportsmatch award and ran a three year project offering free kayak coaching to children from 12 local schools.

Sportsmatch is open to applications for projects that will be delivered in the 2012/13 financial year. Sport England expect to have allocated all the available 2012/13 Sportsmatch funding by the end of Autumn 2012 so they advise to submit application as early as possible. http://www.sportengland.org/funding/sportsmatch.aspx

***************************************** Farnborough Airport community environmental fund grants

For every take-off or landing at Farnborough Airport, the community environmental fund receives money to help support local projects. The airport pays a levy of £2 for every take-off or landing or £5 if the aircraft is a Boeing business jet or an Airbus A310 corporate jet. This money goes into the community environmental fund, managed by Rushmoor Borough Council.

6 If you are a group or an organisation, you can apply for a grant from this fund to support your environmental project, as long as it meets the conditions. To apply for a grant, your project must:  Improve an existing facility or site, or introduce a new facility that everyone can use and enjoy  Be in an area that is noticeably and regularly affected by aircraft coming in and out of Farnborough Airport  Be within three miles (five kilometres) of the centre of the runway (halfway down the main runway)

***************************************** Lord’s Taverners Sports Wheelchair Sponsorship Scheme

Sports clubs, associations and schools can apply to the Lord’s Taverners for funding to assist with the purchase of manual sports wheel chairs for young people aged between 8 and 25. The Lord's Taverners have initiated this scheme to help young disabled people participate in and enjoy wheelchair sport. The funding which is being made available through the Sports Wheelchairs Sponsorship Scheme will award grants of up to 50% of the cost of the wheelchair with a maximum grant of £1,500. The Lord’s Taverners also have a multi- sports wheelchair scheme which enables applicants to obtain a standard chair at a subsidised cost of £350.

***************************************** Kellogg’s Free Training and Grants for New Breakfast Clubs

School staff, parents and group leaders that wish to set up a new breakfast club in a school or community facility can obtain free training to equip staff with the skills they need to start up and run a successful breakfast club. Following the training leaders will be able to apply for a Best Start Breakfast Club grant of £650 to get their new breakfast club up and running. The funding is provided by the education charity "ContinYou" in partnership with Kellogg's. Kellogg's are also currently promoting their Give a Child a Breakfast campaign, which aims to raise £300,000 for new breakfast clubs by the end of 2012.

***************************************** Breaks 4 Kids

Breaks 4 Kids is a charitable fund, run by YHA (Youth Hostel Association) that supports under-privileged young people under the age of 18, travelling as part of an organised group such as; school class, youth club, church group, or a group organised by a body such as the Youth Offending Group or Connexions. They offer grants for up to 50% of the cost of accommodation and food. Trips can be organised or there is a YHS School Trip package available which includes organised activities, linked to the national curriculum which offers social and educational benefits.

Breaks4Kids has benefited over 4,000 children from low income households, who would otherwise been left behind when the rest of their group took a trip. Thus, the scheme has helped a group of underprivileged, vulnerable people to go to Edale, a dedicated Activity Centre in the Peak District National Park. A group of disabled children went to Butharlyp House – where there is a safe play area and plenty of outdoor games equipment.

***************************************** Funding for Financial Literacy Projects

The MSE Charity has announced that its grants programme will re-open for applications on the 1st September 2012. The MSE Charity provides grants to both individuals and constituted community based groups (including schools) to help fight financial and consumer illiteracy and to educate and inform adults and children about consumer and debt issues. Under the programme, grants of up to £5,000 are available for group projects such as self-help groups, schools, workshops and other innovative schemes that seek to educate people about money, debt and consumer issues. Individuals over the age of 18 can apply for a grant of up to £500 to help pay towards a recognised and

7 approved course that will help improve their ability to budget and manage their finances. The grant can be used to pay for financial education course fees and other associated expenses.
