General information 1. The following policy change was recommended by SCRAB to the RMIT Research Committee March 2012.
Change to the identification of ‘Investigators’ on human research ethics applications at RMIT. Under current procedures for human research ethics applications research students can be nominated as the ‘Principal Investigator’ on an application. When a student is conducting research with human participants they are identified on the ethics application form and for administrative purposes as the investigator, even though the student may be undertaking an Honours year, Postgraduate Coursework degree or Masters/Doctoral degree. Their academic supervisor is identified on the application as the supervisor.
It has become clear that, for a variety of reasons, this labelling of a student as the investigator is inappropriate and that a research student’s supervisor should be identified as the principal or first investigator.
Therefore it is proposed to amend relevant documentation so that in the case of a research student applying for ethics approval the application would be made under the senior supervisor’s name; i.e. the supervisor would be identified as the first investigator.
