Thesis Proposal I would like to explore digital protocols by producing work that will translate analog, or painting, into digital. By encoding paint I intend to place it in new structures that ask new questions of art as an object. The work will become interactive, making the dialogue with the viewer the subject, attempting to build a new aesthetic or re-evaluate what we consider aesthetics. This summer I will create a series of paintings that will use digital protocols as templates. These "algorithms" may come in the form of color, dimension, or composition. This will be the first step in creating a visual data base for use in the subsequent project. The painting will become modular. I intend to digitally manipulate them using different programs including 3D and motion graphics. They will become components that will be open to constant change by the viewers. The platforms I intend to use for interactivity are video games, social media and an original web site. I am unsure of how this will translate or what the work will look like. The aesthetic is less important then the interactivity and making the viewer a part of the work. Ideally, I would like to see the end product in an installation with virtual reality or projection mapping.

I think your project has great potential Adelfino. You should figure out the final format for your project ASAP. I personally think that creating a VR digital artistic tool would be the most appealing approach because although some attempts has been made (Tilt brush, PaintLab or A-painter among others) they don’t fully use the potential of both mediums (traditional media and VR). For example, what if you apply the properties of the popular Kyle T. Webster brushes to 3D VR tools, so you could use different kind of paints, pigments, techniques? There is quite a lot of experimentation being done on this issue right now, and a lot of commercial interest as well. What it might help you to find sponsors and collaborators (programmers) for the project. After all you’re studying in one of the main Art schools in the world! Think big…
