JOB TITLE: Editor REPORTS TO: Publisher FUNCTION: Publishing DEPARTMENT: Publishing Job purpose: The Editorial team supports NGC’s Publishing department in delivering high quality publications which reflect the scholarship, values and activities of the National Gallery, and generate profit for the Gallery, through the National Gallery Trust. NGC publishes a variety of titles, including guidebooks, exhibition catalogues, collection catalogues and the Technical Bulletin. The Editor’s role is to project manage books from commission through to publication, on schedule and to agreed business targets. He/she will manage external authors, freelance copy editors and designers, liaising with colleagues across the NG and NGC, and with NGC’s distributors.

Key Key Activities / Decision Areas Accountabilities 1. Project Management • Assisting with and project managing a number of titles from across the -Editorial publishing list, to be allocated in consultation with the Publisher, taking an active role in developing content, format, design and extent of each title and seeing projects through to publication. • Supporting the work of other Editors and Publisher as required. • Managing key stakeholders (multiple authors, freelance designers and editors for each title) • Maintaining awareness and knowledge of trade art publishing and other museum publishing activity • Managing the schedule and budget for each title, ensuring that publication dates are adhered to and projects brought in on budget. • Appointing freelance designers and editors as required, in consultation with the Publisher. • Drafting of contracts for authors and external contractors. • Liaising with Picture Research to gather comparative and other illustrations as needed and work to ensure consistent crediting of images. • Checking copy for other NGC departments as required (e.g. merchandise and marketing materials) • Ensuring that final digital and paper files are archived for every project. 2. Sales & Marketing • Devising appropriate marketing strategies for each title in consultation with NGC and NG departments, Yale University Press and trade partners. • With the Merchandising Manager, monitoring sales and stock levels and advising on and implementing reprints. • Instigating and negotiating sales or licensing of co-edition rights with foreign and trade publishers. • Attending book fairs and other relevant publishing events as required. • Compiling and presenting sales materials to external distributors and publishers as required (e.g. Yale sales conferences). 3. Communication • Liaising with NGC departments on costing, content, format, print run, pricing and marketing of titles (departments include Publishing, Production, Picture Research, Retail Managers, Digital Trading, Marketing, Finance). • Liaising with NG departments on sponsorship, content, design and approval of titles (Director, Curators, Exhibitions, Conservation/Scientific, Communications, Education and Development). • Liaising with Yale University Press or other trade distributors and co- publishers on content, scheduling, sales materials, sales catalogue blurbs and images, stock levels. 4. Financial & Asset • Exercise tight financial control on book budgets and prepare ex post facto Management reports for published titles. • Input into budgeting process and proactively seek external sales and co- edition opportunities. 5. General • Take part in company stock takes as required. • Present on behalf of Publishing to company meetings and retail teams, as required • Other reasonable duties as required by the Publisher from time to time.
