Background
A new trend in the entry-level server market is the movement towards cost-effective ATAPI-based platforms. This has created a need for affordable tape backup, with an ATAPI interface, as a solution for data protection on these servers. The PowerVault 100T Travan40 tape drive provides users with this solution. The PowerVault 100T Travan40 drive also offers the capacity and performance tape backup technology that the entry-level server market requires, with a maximum transfer rate of 2MB/s (native) and data cartridge capacity of 20GB (native). The PowerVault 100T Travan40 tape drive’s steel chassis, auto-throttle, and VR2 data channel help to improve product reliability and increase performance. Finally, the PowerVault 100T Travan40 design offers incredible data integrity through its new ‘park’ feature and thermal monitor/sensing circuitry that stop the tape when errors occur.
Product Description
The PowerVault 100T Travan40 drive is a 3.5-inch by 1-inch internal tape drive that can be installed in a 5.25-inch half height drive bay with mounting rails attached. The drive uses industry standard Travan technology media and can read and write up to 20GB of uncompressed capacity at a 2MB/second (uncompressed) maximum sustained transfer rate across an ATAPI (IDE) bus interface. The PowerVault 100T Travan40 tape drive also includes a patented “auto-throttle” design which matches the tape drive speed with host system for the most efficient backup operation - reducing wear-and-tear on the tape and tape drive components. The PowerVault 100T Travan40 is available as an integrated drive within the PowerEdge™ SC servers (for example, the PowerEdge 500 SC, 1400 SC or PowerEdge 1500 SC). Tape Technology Formats Travan technology has been developed as an affordable solution that meets the data protection needs of IT in small-to-medium businesses (SMB). Based on linear quarter-inch cartridge (QIC) technology, Travan
Dell Enterprise Systems Group Page 2 May 2002 technology addresses the tape backup requirements of computing environments and entry-level servers. Travan technology provides a cost-effective drive that has been designed to decrease backup time, improve data storage reliability, reduce tape wear, and increase data integrity when compared to the previous generation TR-5 tape drive: Few drive guides and rollers reduces stress on the tape, helping to improve data reliability and increase tape life The head-to-tape interface (HTI) frees the head gap of debris helping to increase data integrity According to Seagate, the manufacturer of Travan drives, more than 12 million quarter-inch cartridge tape drives, and over 200 million quarter- inch data cartridges, are currently in use worldwide. Quarter-inch data cartridge technology, including Travan, offers excellent performance with high reliability. Quarter-inch tape drive systems are a great solution for backing up and restoring applications for entry-level servers.

PowerVault 100T Travan40 Relative to the PowerVault 100T TR-5 The PowerVault 100T Travan40 tape drive is a complementary product when compared with the current PowerVault 100T TR-5 offering. The PowerVault 100T Travan40 product is the best option for users who: Require additional capacity and faster backup time than TR-5 (Travan20) tape drives Require the reliability of proven Travan technology and want a tape drive with an ATAPI (IDE) interface
Features and Benefits
The features and benefits of the PowerVault 100T Travan40 drive include the following: Form Factor PowerVault 100T Travan40 drive is a 3.5-inch x 1-inch high tape drive that can be installed into a 5.25-inch bay with mounting rails. The smaller form factor allows Travan40 technology to fit into numerous mounting configurations. Performance Maximum transfer rate of the PowerVault 100T Travan40 drive is up to 2.0MB/s (or up to 4.0 MB/s compressed). This translates into a maximum sustained backup rate of up to 14.4 GB/hr. Capacity The PowerVault 100T Travan40 using standard Travan40 media has up to 20GB native capacity (up to 40GB compressed). Data Integrity The PowerVault 100T Travan40 tape drive includes a thermal sensing mechanism and park feature to help to increase data integrity.
