St. Peter’s Parish 929 Main Street, Worcester, MA

Staff Contact: Msgr. Scollen 508-752-4674

Organization Description:

St. Peter’s Parish is a Roman Catholic Church in the heart of the city of Worcester. It is a diverse parish, offering English, Spanish, and Swahili masses. They have a vibrant community, and a great relationship with the surrounding neighborhoods. St. Peter’s has a strong relationship with the Sisters of the Assumption, and the Assumption Center’s Mentoring and Third Day programs are held at the church. St. Peter’s provides additional services for youth, including CCD classes, a community school, and an extremely popular basketball league (approximately 700 Worcester youth participate every season). St. Peter’s also provides a food pantry for food insecure individuals and families.

CBL Opportunities:

Students are welcome to participate in any of the services that St. Peter’s provides, including volunteering with the food pantry (Wednesdays or Thursdays) the basketball program*, tutoring at the community school, and teaching CCD (Sunday mornings). Students are also welcome to discuss additional opportunities with Msgr. Scollen, including participation in the various masses, Spanish- speaking opportunities, and learning more about the other programs the parish carries out and supports.

Students interested in working with the parish in some capacity should plan on scheduling an initial meeting with Msgr. Scollen to discuss your interests, plan out your role, and create a volunteer schedule for the semester. Working with the parish may be an especially viable option for students with flexible schedules and/or students who can only volunteer on the weekends.

*Please do note that if you are interested in volunteering with the basketball league, this commitment will last longer than one semester, as the season runs through the winter. Please discuss this option with both Msgr. Scollen and Professor Poche.
