MUSIC APPRECIATION CONCERT REPORT GUIDELINES
A. Two reports on approved live performances are required, each worth 30 points. Two additional concert programs with documentation of attendance are required for 20 points each. With permission of the instructor, one video, DVD, or You-tube performance from the approved list on the instructor’s website may be viewed, but a written report must accompany it. One extra report on a live performance may be submitted for 30 points of extra credit OR the student may submit up to two documented concert programs at 15 points each for extra credit. Concert programs from Shelton and UA must be stamped at the conclusion of the performance. Students may choose from live performances of choral and vocal music, instrumental music, jazz, or musical theatre at Shelton, Stillman, UA, other colleges, area high schools, or the Bama Theatre. An excellent source is the weekly Terrific Tuesday concert series at Shelton. Concerts occur every Tuesday from 1:15-2:00 PM in the Recital Hall near the Bean-Brown Theatre.
B. Each report should contain a cover page including the title of the event; the date, time, and length of performance; the student’s name and class; and the date submitted.
C. Each report should include a full page of content, typed in 10 or 12 point font, double- spaced, and should follow this format:
1. In an introductory paragraph, name the event and briefly describe your response to it. 2. In at least one paragraph, summarize the plot of an opera, a musical, or a video; or describe what took place in the concert. 3. Describe at least two musical numbers from the performance in detail using a musical vocabulary learned in class. 4. Include a paragraph about the life of one of the composers whose music was performed. List the source of the information. The textbook may not serve as a source. 5. Attach the printed program when one is available.
D. Errors will result in points being deducted in the following way: Lack of cover sheet: -1 Musical numbers not in quotations, italics, or underlined: -1 Less than the four required paragraphs: -1 No composer biography: -2 No source listed: -1 Less than one full page of content: not to exceed -2 Spelling and grammatical errors: not to exceed -5
E. In the event that an instructor believes the submitted report is not in the student’s own words, the student may receive no points for the report or may be offered an opportunity to resubmit it.
