Version Description: Students investigate a wide range of media and techniques, from both an historical and contemporary perspective, as they engage in art-making processes of creating two-dimensional works, which may include drawing, painting, printmaking, and/or collage. Student artists reflect on their own artwork and that of others through critical analysis to achieve artistic goals related to craftsmanship, technique, and application of 21st- century skills. This course incorporates hands-on activities and consumption of art materials.
Course Overview for the semester:

Week 3 Organization of elements and Create a balanced geometric triangle principles of art design and turn it into a mirror image.
Week 4/5 Color Theory: Draw a unique color wheel and label the Andy Warhol corresponding colors including complementary colors. Compose a positive/negative space artwork with complementary colors. Week 6/7 Values U 3, p.77 Shading exercise with 6 values. Draw one J. D. Hillberry still life object from observation with at least 3 values. Draw a still life with 3 objects from observation with at least 3 values. Week 8/9 Texture U 2, p. 34-35 Draw flowers, plants, trees from imagination and observation. Georgia O’Keefe Week Perspective Draw a 1-point perspective in a building Anselm Kiefer 10/11 environment. Draw a room with a 1-point perspective. Week Lines and shapes Create a comic figure .Draw the figure 4 Walt Disney and others 12/13 times, standing, running, sitting and sleeping, Use moving, contour and gesture lines. Use zentangles to compose a unique design. Week Concept Create a dreamlike drawing with Diego Rivera 14/15 Meaning/personal voice imagination, fantasy, symbolism. Create an awareness picture. Katherine Chang Liu 16/17/18 media Weekly or Reflection and Evaluation Art Vocabulary. bi-weekly Use descriptive art terms for reflection and evaluation of last assignment Weekly or Art History Who, when, where, why. bi-weekly Academic Goals: By the end of the course, you must demonstrate the ability to: 1.know and apply the elements and principles of art to create a basic composition. 2. utilize effectively the basic of color theory. 3. render lines and shapes of simple subjects. 4. render the illusion of simple textures. 5. render the illusion of 3-D with 2-3 values (shading). 6. render a one-point perspective. 7. create artwork with meaning/with personal voice. 8. show beginning technical skills with media such as pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, pen and markers. 9. identify artists and their styles related to the assignments (When, where, what, why). 10.apply descriptive art terms when evaluating and explaining own art works. Teacher Support: Monday-Thursday, the last 15 minutes before lunch ends. If more time is needed, let me know.
Honor Code: Students are expected to adhere to the VCS Student Code of Conduct. Plagiarism or academic dishonesty of any kind will not be tolerated and will result in the student receiving a F on the assignment and a discipline referral.
Materials Required: Two pencils, eraser, sharpener, colored pencils, markers, oil pastels, watercolors (art kits are available for $ 5.00 or purchase the material in a store. In addition you will need a sketch-or notebook.
Makeup & Submission Policy: Students have until the next summative to retake an assessment. The retake will not be offered later. Students may only retake one summative per quarter. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule the retake.
Homework: Homework is given as an essential part of the curriculum to reinforce student skills and assess student learning. Believing homework is important to promote student success; DHS teachers will assign homework as appropriate, assess the homework for accuracy, provide timely feedback and assign the homework to the formative category.

Follow all school rules. (Especially no aggression or profane language). 2. Follow directions. (Listen to teacher). 3. Talk only with permission (You can talk during artmaking but you are expected to be quiet as soon as you hear the attention sign “5,4,3,2,1, stop what you are doing right now and listen”. 4. Do your work. (Be on task at all times). 5. Be on time and be prepared (please have pen, pencil, eraser, sharpener and notebook with you every day).
Expectations 1.Please remain seated during instruction (teacher speaking). 2.No food, drinks ( except water) or gum permitted in the classroom – place your backpacks on the floor, not on your desk. 3. 10/10 rule: no passes during the first and last 10 min of class – restroom passes are limited. Sign bathroom sheet with name and time. 4. Electronics- see code of conduct; electronics are to be turned off during class. They can be used for some assignments at teacher’s discretion. 5. Dress Code – dress according to the uniform policy.

If cellphones or other electronic devices are used without permission from teacher or used during BYOT for other purposes than the class assignment (texting, social media, games etc.), the student will be told to turn it off and keep it in the backpack. If not, it will be locked up in the storage room or a referral must be given.
