8th Grade Earth Science Lesson Plans for February 1-5
Monday Objectives: 1. Explain why water erosion is mostly responsible for shaping Earth’s land surface. 2. Describe land features formed by water erosion and deposition. 3. Describe the cause of groundwater erosion. 4. Describe land features formed by deposition of sediment by rivers and streams. 5. Describe features of a river system Pg 272 Section 2 “Water Erosion” I. Run off and erosion a. Rills and gullies b. Streams and rivers c. Amount of runoff II. Erosion by rivers a. Waterfalls b. Flood plain c. Meanders d. Oxbow lakes III. Deposits by Rivers a. Alluvial fans b. Deltas c. Soil on flood plains IV. Groundwater erosion a. Cave formation b. Karst topography Assignment—List the 4 very important facts about this section.
Tuesday I-Max video on Caves and groundwater erosion “Amazing Caves” Objectives: 1. Identify structures formed by groundwater erosion and describe processes involved in groundwater erosion. 2. Observe groundwater erosion and chemical weathering. Assignment—Define stalactite and stalagmites and explain how caves are formed.
Wednesday Science and Society pg 284 Objectives: 1. Students discuss issues related to flooding and its effect on homes and flood plains. Assignment—Guided reading worksheet for section 3 “Force of Moving Water”.
Thursday 1. Describe how water is able to do work 2. Explain how sediment enters rivers and streams 3. List factors that affect a rivers ability to erode and carry sediment. Pg 286 Section 3 “Force of Moving Water” I. Work and energy a. Potential and kinetic energy II. How Water Erodes a. Abrasion III. Erosion and sediment load a. Slope b. Volume of flow c. Streambed shape d. Factors that affect erosion and deposition Assignment—pg 289 Math-Analyzing Data
Friday Streambed activity Objectives: 1. Identify stream and river erosion and depositional features. 2. Draw and label erosion and depositional features of a river and stream, including alluvial fans, meandering, oxbow lakes, deltas, and rills and gullies.
Science Standards for chapter 9
1. Explain ethical decisions with consequences of certain actions 2. Describe how smaller experiments in lab relate to larger real world systems. 3. Recognize constructive and destructive forces that affect Earth’s history. 4. Describe how Earth’s features are changing constantly by slow and fast processes such as erosion, weathering, deposition, and landslides. 5. Specify controlled and measured variables to be changed in experiments.
