HILARY TERM 2018

THE CHAPEL: WHAT IS IT FOR? Why do we have a Chapel in the Inn? I suggest for at least these three reasons:

First because everyone needs to consider even if they cannot answer, the great questions of life, who are we, why are we here, to whom if anyone are we responsible, and so on. What is done in the Chapel may help us to think about these questions, and to point us at least in the direction of answers.

Secondly because the very existence of such a place reminds us, whether or not we believe in God, that there is more to life than work, and more to work than making a living; there is in fact a spiritual (or at least a non-material) dimension to our existence.

Thirdly because we are a community and the Chapel is a worthy place for the prayer and praise of the community to be offered to Almighty God.

Why should the Chapel be a place of Anglican worship, rather than multi- denominational or multi-faith? In what may be called "formal" worship (and I do not mean anything derogatory by that term) it is necessary to use some form or other. The Church of England's form is the one for which the Chapel was built and intended. However, much of what we do is not specifically Anglican, for instance our Bible Readings and Carol Services; and my hope is that all our services, formal and informal, may be found helpful and positive by any believer in God and by any seeker after truth.

While the Chapel is particularly for those who live and work in the Inn, whether as judges, barristers, students, clerks, employees or tenants, it is also open to the public and we are always glad to welcome anyone of whatever faith or none.

The Chapel is open from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. Some find it a convenient place for quiet meditation, and the high pews, though they have disadvantages, are well suited to those who wish to pray undisturbed.

The Preacher

Lincoln’s Inn Chapel follows the traditional services of Matins and Eucharist according to the Book of Common Prayer. Orders of Service can be followed on the laminated cards and on page 1 (Matins) and page 236 (Eucharist) of the Book of Common Prayer. The page number of the psalm is noted on the music list. In Eastertide we sing the Easter Anthems in place of the Venite. They can be found on page 128 of the Prayer Book.

Every Sunday after the Service, all members of the congregation are invited to join the Masters of the Bench and Members of the Inn for a brief social gathering in the Crypt of the Old Hall.

Dates and times of all Chapel events in the Chapel in the Hilary Term are set out in the Chapel Calendar to be found at the back of the Chapel. Please take one. Epiphany 2 14 January 2018

Here lies the way for pilgrim Kings, Three Magi on an ancient path, Black hours begin their journeyings. Wake, O earth, awake. Their star has risen in our hearts, Empty thrones, abandoned fears, Out on the hills their journey starts, In dazzling darkness, God appears.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Psalm 51.1

Then cried I unto thee, O Lord: and gat me to my Lord right humbly. What profit is there in my blood: when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust give thanks unto thee: or shall it declare thy truth? Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me: Lord, be thou my helper. Thou hast turned my heaviness into joy: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness. Therefore shall every good man sing of thy praise without ceasing: O my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.

Lord, let me know mine end Lord, let me know mine end, and the number of my days, that I may be certified how long I have to live. Behold, thou hast made my days as it were a span long, and mine age is even as nothing in respect of thee; And verily every man living is altogether vanity. For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain; he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them. And now, Lord, what is my hope? truly my hope is even in thee. Hear my prayer, 0 Lord, and with thine ears consider my calling; hold not thy peace at my tears. O spare me a little, that I may recover my strength, before I go hence, and be no more seen.

Timor et tremor

Timor et tremor venerunt super me, et caligo cecidit super me. Miserere mei, Domine, quoniam in te confidit anima mea. Exaudi, Deus, deprecationem meam, quia refugium meum es tu et adiutor fortis. Domine, invocavi te, non confundar.

Fear and trembling have come upon me and darkness has seized my soul. Have mercy on me, O Lord, have mercy upon me, for in you have I put my trust. Hear my prayer, O my God, for you are my refuge and my strong helper. I have called upon you, O Lord, that I not be confounded.

Adapted from the Psalms The Lamentation

How doth the city sit solitary that was full of people: how is she become as a widow! She that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces: how is she become tributary! She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers, she hath none to comfort her.

The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn assembly: all her gates are desolate, and she herself is in bitterness. The Lord hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy. All they that go by clap their hands at her: they hiss, and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem saying, “Is this the city that men called the perfection of beauty; the joy of the whole earth?”

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord thy God.

For these things I weep: mine eye runneth down with water. From on high hath the Lord sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day. My flesh and my skin hath he made old: he hath broken my bones. He hath builded against me; and compassed me with gall and travail. He hath made me to dwell in dark places: as those that have been long dead. I am become a derision to all my people: and their song all the day. Let him give his cheek to him that smiteth him: let him be filled full with reproach. Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by: behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow. Remember mine affliction and my misery: the wormwood and the gall.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord thy God. Remember, O Lord, what is come upon us: behold and see our reproach. The joy of our heart is ceased: our dance is turned into mourning. The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, for we have sinned. For this our heart is faint: for these things our eyes are dim. Let us search and try our ways: and turn again unto the Lord. Turn thou us unto thee, O Lord, and we shall be turned: renew our days as of old. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed: because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul: therefore will I hope in him. O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul: thou hast redeemed my life.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord thy God.

The Lent Prose

Hear us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we have sinned against thee.

To thee, Redeemer, on thy throne of glory: Lift we our weeping eyes in holy pleadings: Listen, O Jesu, to our supplications.

O thou chief cornerstone, right hand of the Father: Way of salvation, gate of life celestial: Cleanse thou our sinful souls from all defilement.

God, we implore thee, in thy glory seated: Bow down and hearken to thy weeping children: Pity and pardon all our grievous trespasses.

Sins oft committed, now we lay before thee: With true contrition, now no more we veil them: Grant us, Redeemer, loving absolution.

Innocent captive, taken unresisting: falsely accused, and for us sinners sentenced, save us, we pray thee, Jesu, our Redeemer.

Hear us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we have sinned against thee.

Adapted from the Latin responsory Attende Domine by W J Birkbeck (1869-1916)

Herr, mein Hirt, Brunn aller Freuden!

Do not fear, I am with you; Do not recoil, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, and help you as well, I sustain you with the right hand of my righteousness.

Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name, you are mine.

Lord, my Shepherd, fount of all joy! You are mine, I am yours, No one can part us. I am yours, since your life and your blood, For my sake, you have given to death. You are mine, since I seize you And do not, O my light, Let you out of my heart! Let me, let me arrive there, Where you and I will lovingly embrace each other.
