Principal’s Report:

Mrs. Moyer reported:

*It has been a good start to the year so far. The 5th graders are transitioning well; they are mastering their lockers and enjoying having more independence.

*Bus dismissal is going more smoothly this second week of school.

*Back to School Night is scheduled for 9/8 from 5:00 to 8:30pm. This program is for parents only.

*There will be a morning assembly on 11/4—the assembly will involve the HS students who are involved in Mini-Thon and they will be speaking about their event with the Harlem Wizards scheduled for 11/17.

Dr. Catagnus reported:

*There were a few staff changes at the MS for the start of the new school year. We have two new Spanish teachers, a few new classroom aides, and some teachers have moved to new grades.

*Fall sports are underway for the 7th and 8th graders.

*The 7th and 8th grade classes will be starting into their curriculums this week.

*7th graders have an “advisory time” in the morning, while 8th graders have a “flex time”; this time may be used for club meetings and student government meetings.

*The 7th grade field trip to Nolde Forest is coming up soon. Old Business:

*No old business to discuss.

New Business:

*A few committee sign-up sheets were passed around during the meeting. Parents should note that they will soon receive an email from PIC with a link to a Google form. This form will allow parents to sign up for committees and to choose which volunteer opportunities they may be interested in.

*The 5th Grade Ice Cream Social is scheduled for Friday, 9/16 from 7:00 to 9:00pm. We are in need of a chairperson and parent volunteers for this event. Tara has already distributed the permission slips.

*The Teacher Grant Committee will be meeting soon to review and approve the teacher requests that are submitted.

*Dawn Koller spoke about the 5/6 Grade Point Parent Program. A point parent’s role is more of a “communication liaison” between the teachers and the class parents. The point parent will periodically check with the teacher to assess their needs or the classroom needs (volunteers, copying, donations…). To get involved--please check off that you are interested in the Point Parent Program on the Google form that will be emailed out soon.

*Cherrydale Farms Fundraiser: This is our PTO’s largest fundraiser and it offers a wide variety of items to purchase from their catalog. The kids get very excited for this fundraiser and there are several student incentives for sales. The sale of 10 items allows a student to attend the Mega Party event (12/1) and the sale of 30 items allows a student to participate in the Limo Lunch (11/18). The kick-off assembly will be 10/6 and product distribution is 11/21.

*Yearbook Committee: Parents are encouraged to start taking pictures at student events, especially MS sporting events and assemblies. (Preferably no cell phone pictures please). The committee will start meeting in January to begin creating the yearbook.

*Box Tops Committee: Mandy Hinkel is the chairperson. We’ll be collecting both Labels for Education and Box tops; the collection boxes will be in the cafeteria. Over 7,000 box tops were collected last year for a total of $573. 5th grade won the collection contest last year and enjoyed an End of the Year party. *Please also register your Giant Bonus card, so the rewards go the MS.

*TAG Auction Gallery: This fundraiser will be held again and is tentatively scheduled for late January. Auction items were collected and donations from businesses were solicited for use at this event. PIC receives 100% of the proceeds and we made close to $5,000 last year. We are in need of more committee volunteers this year and more details about this event will be coming soon.

Next PIC meeting: Tuesday, October 4, 2016

Meeting adjourned at 8:11pm

Respectfully submitted by: Tina Duplass, PIC Secretary
