  • From Real Time to Reel Time: the Films of John Schlesinger
From Real Time to Reel Time: The Films of John Schlesinger A study of the change from objective realism to subjective reality in British cinema in the 1960s By Desmond Michael Fleming Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2011 School of Culture and Communication Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne Produced on Archival Quality Paper Declaration This is to certify that: (i) the thesis comprises only my original work towards the PhD, (ii) due acknowledgement has been made in the text to all other material used, (iii) the thesis is fewer than 100,000 words in length, exclusive of tables, maps, bibliographies and appendices. Abstract The 1960s was a period of change for the British cinema, as it was for so much else. The six feature films directed by John Schlesinger in that decade stand as an exemplar of what those changes were. They also demonstrate a fundamental change in the narrative form used by mainstream cinema. Through a close analysis of these films, A Kind of Loving, Billy Liar, Darling, Far From the Madding Crowd, Midnight Cowboy and Sunday Bloody Sunday, this thesis examines the changes as they took hold in mainstream cinema. In effect, the thesis establishes that the principal mode of narrative moved from one based on objective realism in the tradition of the documentary movement to one which took a subjective mode of narrative wherein the image on the screen, and the sounds attached, were not necessarily a record of the external world. The world of memory, the subjective world of the mind, became an integral part of the narrative.

THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL \Typical Really" An Examination of the Emergence of a British Art-Cinema during the 1960s being a Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Hull by Martin R. Hall, BA (Hons) March, 2013 Acknowledgements I want to give thanks first and foremost to my Dad, without whom so much more than just this thesis would not have been possible. Thank you for everything. More thanks go to my wife, an immeasurable wellspring of support. You helped me through, from proof reading to just about everything else. If you could have done the work for me I know you would have, however reluctantly! You have done so much to help and support me in every way thinkable that I am astounded as I now think about your part in all of this. I thank you and, of course, I love you. Thanks must be given to Dr. Bruce Woodcock, whose guidance and encouragement started me on this self-destructive path into academia. Thank you also to Dr. John Hoyles and the Hull Film Society minions for my education and amusement, merci beaucoup. I thank Dr. Alan Burton, one of my many supervisors, for your direction and support in the early stages of my research, and Professor Neil Sinyard for sharing his wealth of experience in aid of my work and in introducing me to information and to people. Finally, thank you Dr. James Aston for your assistance and counsel during my final stretch. Whilst my guidance was thrust unexpectedly upon you, you were a resounding source of help and advice, and for that I am extremely grateful.

  • Richard Lester – 1986
Contemporaneamente, sponsorizzato da Peter Sellers, conduce uno show comico dai vari titoli, Fred, Son of Fred ed Idiots Weekly.

Just one month after they exploded onto the U.S. scene with their Ed Sullivan Show appearance, John, Paul, George, and Ringo began working on a project that would bring their revolutionary talent to the big screen. A Hard Day’s Night, in which the bandmates play wily, exuberant versions of themselves, captured the astonishing moment when they officially became the singular, irreverent idols of their generation and changed music forever. Directed with raucous, anything-goes verve by Richard Lester and featuring a slew of iconic pop anthems, including the title track, “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “I Should Have Known Better,” and “If I Fell,” A Hard Day’s Night, which reconceived the movie musical and exerted an incalculable influence on the music video, is one of the most deliriously entertaining movies of all time. • PRINCESS THEATER Herald-Citizen, Cookeville, TN the Princess Theatre Was a Favorite Cookeville Attracti
PRINCESS THEATER Herald-Citizen, Cookeville, TN http://www.ajlambert.com The Princess Theatre was a favorite Cookeville attraction to meet friends and watch a movie. It was in operation from 1935 to the late 1970's and was located at the corner of West Broad and Church where Regions Bank stands today. Source: Putnam County, Tennessee, 1850-1970 by Mary Jean DeLozier, pp. 216, The movie industry began releasing “talkies” in 1927, and owner Edwin C. Reeves installed sound equipment in the Strand in 1930. The first machines were defective, dialogue was often garbled, and sound projectors constantly broke down. Most customers did not complain, however. They were pleased if they could understand only a few words. In 1934 Mid-State Theatre Company, Stacey D. Wilhite, president; Hugh S. Hargis, vice-president; and Edwin C. Reeves, secretary, began construction of the Princess Theatre on the site of a former hotel in West Side. The new cinema opened 1 October 1935 with the move “ginger,” starring Ginger Rogers. Admission was twenty-five and ten cents, and there were four features weekly: a Monday-Tuesday film, a Wednesday show, and a Thursday-Friday movie (when the “big” pictures came to Cookeville). A double- feature of westerns usually played on Saturdays, when the theater opened at eleven and movies ran continuously until nearly midnight. A popper stood outside the cinema, and boys sold five and ten cent bags of corn to patrons and passersby. Leisure Time Activities: While much social life in Putnam County continued to revolve around churches, residents of the county, with their new cars and more leisure time, found it possible to “get out and go” as never before.
