OMS Writing Prompt Response 1

OMS writing prompt response 1 Santiago is a sweet, old man. He works for a living and he fishes. He is a poor man, who recently can’t find any fish. People don’t like him anymore because he is ‘unlucky’. He has not caught a fish in 84 days. Manolin looks out for Santiago. Once the boy got frustrated at himself for not giving the old man more supplies; shirts; shoes, ect. Santiago is the hero, in a way. Manolin is the side kick, kind of. They work well together.

OMS writing prompt response 2 The relationship between Santiago and the sea is that Santiago is determined to catch and kill the fish. The fish is determined to run away. They are both desperate to live. They both, Santiago and the fish will not give up without a fight. The fish is kind of like Santiago’s old, aging side. He keeps on fighting his old age, and he won’t give up, until he is dead. “Now I must convince him and then I must kill him.” Santiago is getting desperate over the fish. “The fish is my friend too… but I must kill him.” Santiago and the sea, in some ways, are one. Santiago treats and talks to the sea creatures nicely. He has to kill some sea creatures along the way, but he apologizes and kills them quickly. He believes, in being spiritual with his surroundings, but that’s what it seems like to me. Santiago is a very nice man, just trying to make a living.

OMS writing prompt response 3 In The old man, and the sea, Realism, and naturalism, is clearly shown throughout the book. With Realism, Santiago is faithful to God. He only kills what he needs, and he asks God for help. “If sharks come, God pity him and me.” Santiago prays for Gods help in catching the big fish, “Blessed Virgin, pray for the death of this fish. Wonderful through he is.” He always had a little prayer he knew, and said right before he went out, “Hail Mary full of Grace the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among Women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.” Naturalism is something that portrays people’s ordinary lives. With Santiago, he has fish. That is all he knows. “87 days without fish.” His help, the boy, has hope in him. “I know you did not leave me because you doubted.” The boy’s parents didn’t like Santiago because he was unlucky. “It was papa who made me leave.”

OMS writing prompt response 4 The theme in The old Man and the Sea is, even though you are old, you can still do what you want, don’t let age hold you back. With the old man, it’s mind over matter. Even though his hands are cut, his back hurts, and he’s dehydrated, the man still tries to capture the fish, or tackle his obstacle. “Fish, I’ll stay with you until I am dead.” The old man had confidence in beating the fish, and that is what he wanted, the fish. “Fish, I love you and respect you very much. But I will kill you dead before this day ends.” The moral of this story is to never give up, and try your hardest. “I’ll fight them until I die.” The old man, Santiago, had faith in himself, and he beat the great fish till it died. The fish is a symbol because it represents your goal, and the dead fish represents your goal accomplished.
