Contents 1. Background Information Arthritis Research UK is the charity dedicated to stopping the devastating impact that arthritis has on people’s lives. Everything that we do is focused on taking the pain away and keeping people active. Our remit covers all conditions which affect the joints, bones and muscles including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back pain and osteoporosis. Ever since the charity was established in 1936, Arthritis Research UK has been striving to do something about the scourge of arthritis. We’re the only charity in the UK focused on funding research into all forms of arthritis, and the biggest charitable funder of arthritis research in Europe. Arthritis Research UK is committed to raising the profile of arthritis and to making a real difference to people's lives. We:  fund research into the cause, treatment and cure of arthritis;  provide information on how to maintain healthy joints and bones and to live well with arthritis and;  champion the cause, influence policy change and work in partnership with others to achieve our aims. We depend on public support and the generosity of our donors to keep doing this vital work. Arthritis (the term representing a range of conditions that affect muscles, bones and joints) is a huge problem, affecting almost 10 million people across the UK. It is not a condition solely of the elderly but affects children and adults of all ages. Some forms of arthritis can and do kill. More than 1 in 6 people of all ages struggle with the pain and disability of arthritis every day. Arthritis is the biggest cause of pain and disability in the UK. Musculoskeletal conditions account for one in five GP consultations, rising to a third of all in the over 50's. In March 2010 Arthritis Research UK re-launched the fight against arthritis and identified 10 core goals all aimed at improving peoples’ lives, taking the pain away and helping people to remain active. Everything we do as a charity is designed to have maximum impact on these ambitious goals. Arthritis Research UK cannot achieve these goals alone and so will actively encourage others in government, the NHS, academic institutions, industry and the third sector to work in collaboration.

Our Goals Our 10 goals to 2020 can be grouped into three overarching themes: understanding the disease & treatment; improving the quality of life for those affected; and societal change. In 2010 we set out on our journey to work towards these goals by 2020: Raise awareness and understanding of arthritis and the leading role Arthritis Research UK plays in the battle against it. At least half of the UK’s population will be aware of the pain and disability associated with arthritis and will know how to reduce their risk of developing it. Awareness and understanding of arthritis will increase. Be at the forefront of international efforts to develop new treatments for arthritis. Treatments that accurately target arthritis will be identified for patients with most forms of arthritis, reducing pain, increasing mobility and allowing a normal quality of life. Ensure more people with arthritis will remain active and free from pain. At least half of arthritis sufferers across all age groups will be able to undertake their normal everyday activities without pain. Reduce the economic impact of arthritis on the individual patient, their family and the wider economy. The number of working days lost and the number of claims for long term Disability Living Allowance as a direct result of arthritis will be halved. Understand how arthritis starts and develops. The charity will have a detailed understanding of the causes and consequences of most forms of arthritis. Reduce the number of deaths and severe complications from arthritis in all its forms. The risk of life threatening complications of severe arthritis will be substantially reduced as a consequence of earlier and more effective treatment, with the risk of premature death falling by 40 per cent. Develop approaches to reduce the need for, and increase the life of, joint replacement. Advances in knowledge will enable the development of new approaches to preserving joint function and minimising pain resulting from arthritis and therefore postpone the need for joint replacement. Such replacements will also last longer and the current rate of complications will be cut by 50 per cent. Reduce pain and disability in children with arthritis, allowing them to have a normal future. Development of more effective treatments will substantially lessen the impact of arthritis starting in childhood allowing at least 80 per cent of children affected to have a normal future life. Be at the forefront of international efforts to harness the potential of stem cells. There will be a well-developed programme of research in the UK with the necessary expertise, investment and infrastructure to carry out internationally competitive research aimed at using the body’s own cells to replace worn out joints in disorders such as osteoarthritis. Build a world class workforce to continue the fight against arthritis. Enough expert scientists and healthcare professionals together with the necessary investment and infrastructure will be in place to continue the fight against arthritis for the foreseeable future.

The organisation Arthritis Research UK is a charity registered in England and Wales and in Scotland. We are governed by a Board of Trustees who are responsible for setting the charity’s strategic direction. Our Board, led by the Chairman, Charles Maisey, is composed of a mix of both scientific experts and lay members each bringing a unique set of skills and experiences. The Board of Trustees meets four times a year but our Trustees also participate in other events throughout the year and serve on various committees involved in specific areas of the charity’s activities. Our Trustees do not get paid for the work they do for the charity. Details of our Chairman and Trustees can be found at the following link: http://www.arthritisresearchuk.org/about_us/how_were_managed/our_trustees/ our_trustees.aspx The charity currently employs around 200 staff across our network of shops, fundraising regions, our main London headquarters and Chesterfield head office. The Senior Leadership Team are driving an ambitious programme of organisational change towards a future where Arthritis Research UK punches above its weight, where people recognise arthritis alongside cancer and heart disease, where its impact on quality of life is understood and where government gives it the priority it deserves. Our vision is for a future where we work with clinicians, scientists and patients to set a national arthritis research strategy and then lead others in its implementation. We want a future where 10 million people no longer suffer in silence. We will listen to them and help them to articulate their needs. We will show government how much of the population is needlessly suffering, how many working days are lost, how much personal distress is being caused. We will stimulate more NHS support for people with arthritis. We will significantly increase the investment in research over the next 10 years. To mobilise others, we recognise that we ourselves need to be focused, efficient and effective and that is why we have been reorganising the charity, looking closely at not only what we do but how we do it. At the heart of these changes is one simple question – “How can we maximise the impact of everything we do to benefit people with arthritis?”
