The publication of a new edition of this work permits me to say that the essay on "The Lady Novelists," quoted in the seventh chapter, was written by George Henry Lewes. Its opinions, however, are substantially those of George Eliot, and they will be found in harmony with her own words. page 1 / 573 Confessing to the error, I yet venture to let the quotations, and the comments on them, stand as at first made. The three poems mentioned on page 75, were among the latest of the productions of George Eliot's pen. It has been suggested to me that I have not done perfect justice to George Henry Lewes, especially in what I say of his books on the Spanish drama and the life of Goethe. I have carefully reconsidered what I wrote of him, and find no occasion for any change of judgment, though two or three words might properly give place to others of a more appreciative meaning. My book has met with much greater praise than I could have expected. Its errors, I have no doubt, are quite numerous enough; and yet I venture to think the main thought of the book is correct. GEORGE ELIOT Guide to records Coventry Archives is located in the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Jordan Well, Coventry, CV1 5QP. Admission to both the Reading Room and Research Room is free. Documents and books can be consulted without charge, but a charge is made for photocopying or the taking of digital images. Visitors are required to make an appointment to view original documents in the Research Room. Material in the Reading Room is available without the need of an appointment. Introduction George Eliot, christened Mary Ann Evans, was born in Nuneaton at the Arbury Estate in 1819 before moving to Griff house in 1820. Throughout her adolescent years she was educated at Misses Franklins School on Warwick Row in Coventry. When she reached 21 her brother married, leaving her and her father to move to Foleshill Road in Coventry, where she become acquainted with the Bray and Hennell families. Evans maintained a longstanding relationship with the Hennell and Bray families, sharing correspondences regularly even when she had moved to London Eliot also participated in the Intellectual circle the Brays had grown at Rosehill, where thinkers of the time such as Herbert Spencer and Robert Owen frequented. It was here that Eliot became influenced by agnostic ideas and translated works by Feuerbach and Strauss. -

John Chapman and the Strand in 1847 On 24 July 1847 the following advertisement appeared in the weekly periodical, the Athenaeum: MR CHAPMAN, Bookseller and Publisher, begs to announce that he has REMOVED his Business from 121 Newgate Street, to more spacious premises on the South side of the STRAND, No 142, a few doors West of Somerset House; and requests, therefore, that all communications may be forwarded to the latter address. For the next seven years John Chapman's 'spacious premises' - consisting of the bookselling business and publishing house, his family home, and rooms for literary lodgers - was the chief place of resort for writers with a book to publish which was in any way radical or unorthodox. -

The right of Jincheng Shi to be identified as Author of this work has been asserted by Jincheng Shi in accordance with the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. 1 Abstract In discussing the relationship between science and religion during the Victorian period, historians have paid much attention to Christian monotheism, deism, spiritualism, materialism, agnosticism, and atheism; however, pantheism has received little attention. Yet the Victorians published thousands of discussions of pantheism, which shows that pantheism was a significant religious position in the Victorian ferment of faith. Through exploring these writings, this dissertation shows that there was considerable interest in pantheism among Victorian thinkers concerning the viability of pantheism and its relationship with science. The first two chapters present a general account of pantheism in Victorian Britain, with eight Victorian advocates of pantheism being identified and their lives and philosophies being introduced. These people are John Hunt, Alfred Barratt, James Martineau, Thomas Elford Poynting, James Hinton, James Allanson Picton, Charles Bray, and Constance Plumptre. As science became the dominant intellectual authority in Victorian Britain, many Victorian religious thinkers made use of it in support of their religious doctrines. -
