Free from library due dates, I indulged in the luxury of reading them from cover to cover. It was therein that I met the members of this Victorian circle, and began to sense the rich interrela­ tionships of their world. In the Letters and in his biography, Professor Haight first gave us the historical George Eliot; his meticulous scholarship has been a continuing inspiration to me. If Gordon Haight introduced me to the facts, J. Hillis Miller introduced me to the theories. PREFACE In the Victorian age, the humanist and the scientist still spoke a common language. A logician could read contempo­ rary poetry; a novelist could debate the latest development in evolutionary theory. The increasingly alienated discourses of the twentieth century have created an intellectual climate that mediates against an accurate reflection of the Victorians. To­ day, the literary critic and the historian of ideas often move in different worlds; the investigator of popular culture may be given short shrift by the more traditional historian of the pe­ riod; science and literature share little common ground. This study attempts to bridge some of these distances, and to achieve a most Victorian ambition: to make it whole. The pages that follow will depict a Victorian circle whose members are drawn from a diverse range of intellectual voca­ tions: John Stuart Mill and Auguste Comte; George Combe and Robert Chambers; Charles Bray and Harriet Martineau; George Henry Lewes and Herbert Spencer; George Eliot. They number among them respected scholars and inflamed ideo­ logues, novelists and philosophers of science; men of letters, renegade industrialists, and bluestockings. They are not the Bloomsbury group or the Cambridge Platonists; neither a cozy biographical circle of intimate friends nor a united band of sec­ Xll PREFACE tarian disciples. Yet the biographical interrelationships among them are intricate and important. In some cases they were drawn together by friendship or love; in all cases they were bound by a shared set of beliefs. As their circle takes shape in these pages, it encompasses a vision distinctively Victorian. What ultimately unites these thinkers is a Victorian frame of mind. George Eliot's heroine Dorothea Brooke finds herself amidst a prototypical Victorian cosmos: "Her world was in a state of convulsive change."1 Jerome Buckley opened his study of The Victorian Temper with the assertion that "the Victorian pe­ riod achieved little of the stability we have learned to associate with a semi-mythical classical culture. It moved from form to form, and nothing stood. Almost every Victorian thesis pro­ duced its own antithesis, as a ceaseless dialectic worked out its designs."2 Although stability may have eluded the collective sensibility of what John Stuart Mill characterized as an "age of transition," individual Victorians of widely-varied persua­ sions strove arduously for the third term of that great nine­ teenth-century dialectic: synthesis. Transition points toward resolution. The "transitional period" of "weak convictions, paralysed intellects, and growing laxity of principle" will ter­ minate in a "renovation .. in the basis of .. belief, lead­ ing to the evolution of some faith, whether religious or merely human, which they can really believe."' Mill's words are apt: all of these Victorians had faith in evo­ lution, and all of them evolved new faiths—hardly orthodox, yet more than "merely human." Walter Houghton draws at­ tention to the note of Evangelical fervor that can be heard in the new rationalist affirmations of faith: "Though for them the revelation was not religious but scientific, the same note of joy, part relief, part excited hope of discovering a new philos­ ophy of man and the universe, is found among the rational­ ists."1 It could be said of the Victorians in this circle that the revelation was both religious and scientific. Intellectually, the men and women in my circle are the heirs of British empiri­ cism, sons and daughters of Francis Bacon and John Locke, PREFACE Xlll eighteenth-century rationalism and association psychology. Yet they are fascinated by the unknowable, the intuitive, the transcendent. They did not consider the material and the spir­ itual irredeemably alienated. Although none were orthodox believers (and all were, in varying degrees, denounced as spir­ itually subversive by their critics), every member of this circle believed, ardently and unwaveringly, in a via media. For them, to explore the mechanisms of the human brain or the progres­ sive development of the natural world was not to deny man's moral and spiritual nature. Although their efforts to conciliate science and faith are not always persuasive, they are unerringly sincere. This intellectual temperament had its roots in romantic pre­ cursors of the preceding generation. In his survey of the tran­ sition From Classic to Romantic, Walter Jackson Bate argued that "nothing is more characteristic of British thought as a whole than its simultaneous confidence, not only in the em­ pirically concrete, but also in an almost intuitional absorption of the experience of concrete phenomena, and in the exclusive working of that intuition through the empirically known."5 Bate's work provided a lively formulation of an intriguing par­ adox: the romantic emphasis on feeling and imagination was a product of the mechanistic eighteenth-century psychology of Locke and Hartley. M. H. Abrams elaborated on these truths in The Mirror and the Lamp: "[Although] almost all the im­ portant romantic theorists commented on the disparity be­ tween imagination and scientific perception.

Then my service in the United States Navy showed me the practical utility of scientific principles, and my graduate studies provided real experience in how science really works. For five years I was involved in nearly all facets of the scientific process. My adult life spans the period of the Voyager missions to the outer planets, the Viking, Pathfinder, and Global Surveyor missions to Mars, and the Pioneer and Magellan missions to Venus. These missions demonstrated the power of scientific observation. Before Voyager, we knew little about the outer planets and even less about their satellites. Even in the largest ground-based telescopes, these appeared as mere pinpoints of light. Voyager revealed them as real worlds with actual, albeit bizarre, geology. Years of speculation were dispelled in a relative moment, reminding me of the Prophet Joseph Smith’s state- ment, “Could you gaze into heaven five minutes, you would know more than you would by reading all that was written on the subject” (History I have come full of the Church, 6:50). I have come full circle, believing today that science is an important source of truth.

    Our Knowledge of the External World as a Field for Scientific Method in Philosophy By Bertrand Russell 1 PREFACE The following lectures[1] are an attempt to show, by means of examples, the nature, capacity, and limitations of the logical-analytic method in philosophy. This method, of which the first complete example is to be found in the writings of Frege, has gradually, in the course of actual research, increasingly forced itself upon me as something perfectly definite, capable of embodiment in maxims, and adequate, in all branches of philosophy, to yield whatever objective scientific knowledge it is possible to obtain. Most of the methods hitherto practised have professed to lead to more ambitious results than any that logical analysis can claim to reach, but unfortunately these results have always been such as many competent philosophers considered inadmissible. Regarded merely as hypotheses and as aids to imagination, the great systems of the past serve a very useful purpose, and are abundantly worthy of study. But something different is required if philosophy is to become a science, and to aim at results independent of the tastes and temperament of the philosopher who advocates them.     The Critique ofthe Principle ofUniformitarianism and the Analysis of High School Earth Science Textbooks Ho Jang Song and Hui Soo An Department ojEarth Science Education, Seoul National University Although uniformitarianism is widely recognized as the basic principle upon which the structure of historical geology has been erected, a closer investigation on the basis of present scientific knowledge and the philosophy of science reveals some of its invalid aspects. The concept of uniformitarianism wasdeveloped in a dual concept in Lyellian days. Substantive uniformitarianism (a testable theory of geologic change postulating uniformity of rates or material conditions) is false, ambiguous and stifling to hypotheses formation. Methodological uniformitarianism (a procedural principle asserting that former changes of the Earth's surface may be explained by reference to causes now in operation) belongs to the defmition of science and is not unique to geology. Moreover, it also has some methodological defects in forming bold and novel working hypotheses. Methodological uniformitarianism today should take the form of a much older and more general scientific principle: Occam's Razor, the principle of simplicity. Accordingly, substantive uniformitarianism, an incorrect theory, should be abandoned. Methodological uniformi­ tarianism, now a superfluous term, should be best confined to the historical roles in geology. In this connection, the presentation of uniformitarianism in high school textbooks was analyzed. It was revealed that text books were riddled with false and misleading statements as to what uniformi­ tarianism means. Since uniformitarianism, as presented in many textbooks, is in direct contradiction to the philosophy of Inquiry learning, it is important to rethink the direction of uniformitarianism presentation in Earth Science curriculum development.

  • Early Buddhist Metaphysics: the Making of a Philosophical Tradition
    EARLY BUDDHIST METAPHYSICS This book provides a philosophical account of the major doctrinal shift in the history of early Theravada tradition in India: the transition from the earliest stratum of Buddhist thought to the systematic and allegedly scholastic philosophy of the Pali Abhidhamma movement. Conceptual investigation into the development of Buddhist ideas is pursued, thus rendering the Buddha’s philosophical position more explicit and showing how and why his successors changed it. Entwining comparative philosophy and Buddhology, the author probes the Abhidhamma’s shift from an epistemologically oriented conceptual scheme to a metaphysical worldview that is based on the concept of dhamma. She does so in terms of the Aristotelian tradition and vis-à-vis modern philosophy, exploiting Western philo- sophical literature from Plato to contemporary texts in the fields of philosophy of mind and cultural criticism. This book not only demonstrates that a philosophical inquiry into the conceptual foundations of early Buddhism can enhance our understanding of what philosophy and religion are qua thought and religion; it also shows the value of fresh perspectives for traditional Buddhology. Combining philosophically rigorous investigation and Buddhological research criteria, Early Buddhist Metaphysics fills a significant gap in Buddhist scholar- ship’s treatment of the conceptual development of the Abhidhamma. Noa Ronkin received her PhD from the University of Oxford. She is currently a lecturer in the Introduction to the Humanities Programme and a Research Fellow at the Center for Buddhist Studies, Stanford University. Her research interests include a range of issues associated with Indian Theravada Buddhist philosophy and psychology, the Abhidhamma tradition and comparative Indian philosophy.

    SURI 7 (2) 2019: 1-22 Emergentism as an Option in the Philosophy of Religion: Between Materialist Atheism and Pantheism James Franklin University of New South Wales Abstract: Among worldviews, in addition to the options of materialist atheism, pantheism and personal theism, there exists a fourth, “local emergentism”. It holds that there are no gods, nor does the universe overall have divine aspects or any purpose. But locally, in our region of space and time, the properties of matter have given rise to entities which are completely different from matter in kind and to a degree god-like: consciousnesses with rational powers and intrinsic worth. The emergentist option is compared with the standard alternatives and the arguments for and against it are laid out. It is argued that, among options in the philosophy of religion, it involves the minimal reworking of the manifest image of common sense. Hence it deserves a place at the table in arguments as to the overall nature of the universe. Keywords: Emergence; pantheism; personal theism; naturalism; consciousness 1. INTRODUCTION The main options among world views are normally classifiable as either materialist atheism, pantheism (widely understood) or personal theism. According to materialist atheism, there exists nothing except the material universe as we ordinarily conceive it, and its properties are fully described by science (present or future).     Elliott Sober Contrastive Empiricism I Despite what Hegel may have said, syntheses have not been very successful in philosophical theorizing. Typically, what happens when you combine a thesis and an antithesis is that you get a mishmash, or maybe just a contradiction. For example, in the philosophy of mathematics, formalism says that mathematical truths are true in virtue of the way we manipulate symbols. Mathematical Platonism, on the other hand, holds that mathematical statements are made true by abstract objects that exist outside of space and time. What would a synthesis of these positions look like? Marks on paper are one thing, Platonic forms an­ other. Compromise may be a good idea in politics, but it looks like a bad one in philosophy. With some trepidation, I propose in this paper to go against this sound advice. Realism and empiricism have always been contradictory tendencies in the philos­ ophy of science. The view I will sketch is a synthesis, which I call Contrastive Empiricism. Realism and empiricism are incompatible, so a synthesis that merely conjoined them would be a contradiction. Rather, I propose to isolate important elements in each and show that they combine harmoniously. I will leave behind what I regard as confusions and excesses. The result, I hope, will be neither con­ tradiction nor mishmash. II Empiricism is fundamentally a thesis about experience. It has two parts. First, there is the idea that experience is necessary. Second, there is the thesis that ex­ perience suffices. Necessary and sufficient for what? Usually this blank is filled in with something like: knowledge of the world outside the mind.

I am together ashamed of myself - do not tell anyone that I am so silly as I appear to her whom I love best ...
