IB Biology Due: Monday Oct 9th Mrs. McCobb

ARBORETUM PROJECT Preparation for your visit 1. Get permission slip signed by parent (even if you are 18). You will receive NO credit without this. 2. Get a group together, no more than four to a group. (Can mix periods)

The Visit: The first thing you need to do is choose an arboretum to visit. The closest one is at California State University, Fullerton. Go to http://fullertonarboretum.org/home.php for hours, maps and information on the arboretum. There may be a small entrance fee, although in the past students were free. You may go with your parents, OR with permission from your parents, you may go as a group together. There are other arboretums, such as the one at the Huntington Library or Descanso Gardens, but they are much further away. Take a tape measure or ruler and you will need at least one camera (good quality phone is fine) for pictures.

Requirements: 1. Take a picture of your group at the entrance to the Arboretum, so that it shows the name of the Arboretum and ALL of your group. (2 points) 2. There are a number of different plant communities that are exhibited at the arboretum (Mediterranean, Desert, Woodlands, etc.). You must choose two communities to study. Take pictures of four different plants in each of the two communities that you choose. (8 plants total)  Describe your community. Include details on climate (temp range), biodiversity of species (amount and list different plants that live in this community), time of flowering (if it’s a flowering plant), location in the U.S. and any other important or unique information. For each plant you will need—USE HEADINGS AND SUBHEADINGS: a. The name of the plant (common and scientific) b. Describe the plant: how tall, what the leaves look like, color, flowers, bloom time, temperature range, and any unique features etc. c. Describe the type of soil they typically grow in (sandy/moist, pH etc.) d. Describe the distribution of your species. (Are the species closely or widely spread apart? Do they only grow in certain locations in your community? etc.) e. Describe any special adaptations that the plants exhibit that make them fit into the climate they are found in. f. Describe where you would find this plant in California. Specific locations! If you can’t find it in California, say so, and describe where they are found. *You will need to add additional information from outside sources to make sure this section is DETAILED. Must cite sources within text (Author, year) as well as a full citation section at the end (MLA). **No one word/short answers—Book/pages needs to be organized WITH HEADINGS AND SUB HEADINGS. (10 points)

3. Compare the two plant communities that you looked at. How are they similar or different? This should be detailed! You may use a graphic organizer to compare, but it needs to be clear. (4 points) 4. All permission slips should be secured in your project as well. Lack of permission slips (for ALL members) will result in additional points lost (2 points--- -5 points if missing any permission slips) 5. The finished product FOR YOUR GROUP should look like a plant book, with titles, pictures and information about each plant. (Only one per group). See examples in class. Neatness and organization counts. All pictures need to be professionally developed in color (no printers). Everything should be typed and organized. Font style and size should be uniform on all pages. A sources cited section is needed on the last page (MLA-use Citation machine). (5 points)---CAN DO THIS ON GOOGLE SLIDES IN A DIGITAL FORMAT a. If making a physical book, it must be properly secured, pages should be easy to turn, and book is not falling apart with materials coming unglued. It should look like time was spent on this project. Not just thrown together... (2 points) *All pages should be UNIFORM. Same font, same headings etc. *All writing must be your own. You may not copy and paste from any sources. IB Biology Mrs. McCobb Arboretum Alternative Assignment

For this assignment you must do the following:

1. Describe how dicot-flowering plants reproduce. Include a real-life example. This should require one page minimum-MLA format with sources cited. (5 points)

2. Describe the roles of phloem and xylem in transpiration and translocation. This should require one page minimum- MLA format with sources cited. (5 points)

3. Define the following terms. These should be CLEAR and detailed descriptions. Include a real-life example for each. Use your own words. Include pictures where necessary. This should be one page minimum, include sources where needed. (5 points)  Biome  Mesophyll  Adaptation  Vascular  Ecosystem  Spore  Binomial nomenclature  Sporophyte  Deciduous  Gametophyte  Evergreen  Haploid  Stomata  Diploid

4. Choose a biome to describe. Make sure to include all of the following information:  Average climate and conditions for plants, including soil type (type, drainage, pH, etc).  Name 4 dominant types of plants found in this biome (including the common name and the scientific name of each plant) i. The adaptations that these plants have that make them fit into this biome ii. How we use these plants (medicine, food etc.) iii. Include pictures of the 4 plants you described (In color, and clearly printed out)

5. Describe where the biome you chose in #4 are found in California and in the United States. Provide a detailed written description and a map.
