Position Title: Public Safety Officer

Department / Location: Public Safety / Public Safety Facility

Position Summary:

To provide a variety of community services not requiring licensed police officers in areas including, but not necessarily limited to: traffic / parking; equipment maintenance; the watch property program; crime prevention; transport of personnel or evidence and animal control.

Essential Accountabilities and Expected Outcomes

1) Enforces City ordinances and assists peace officers with traffic management at accident scenes and at traffic survey sites.

 Citation activity increases compliance with City ordinances. Documented patterns of traffic/parking violations is helpful for planning patrols and managing traffic and parking throughout the City.

2) Assists in the maintenance of department emergency equipment, vehicles/apparatus, and inventory of medical supplies.

 Department personnel in the field can rely on the operation of equipment and availability of medical supplies.

3) Performs fire fighter activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing other fire related tasks.

4) Transports personnel and/or evidence as requested, ensuring that safety and security is maintained at all stages of such transports.

 Peace officers are relieved of administrative support duties so that time is released for patrol and response. Evidence arrives at the appropriate agency on time and intact.

5) Monitors designated properties on the watch list and reports any unusual or suspicious activity to a licensed peace officer.

 Property watch activities broaden patrol of the City without using licensed peace officers.

6) Assists peace officers and firefighters as directed in setting up and preventative measures intended to help reduce and prevent crime and fire emergencies in the City.

 Assistance is timely and reliable, contributing to the impact of crime prevention and fire/life safety initiatives throughout the City.

 Ordinances are enforced in a timely and consistent manner that contributes to good community relations.

8) Assists peace officers in monitoring prisoners in City jail cells.  Jail cells and surrounding areas are kept safe for both staff and prisoners.

9) Performs other job related responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

Typical Working Environment:

Most of the work is performed outside traveling throughout the City. There are some hazards related to dealing with domesticated and undomesticated animals. Work is performed in all seasons and weather conditions.

Typical Physical Requirements for This Position:

Must be in sufficiently good physical condition to perform all essential duties and responsibilities.

Required Selection Criteria to Qualify for This Position:  High school graduate or equivalent  Valid Minnesota driver’s license and satisfactory driving record  One year work experience of a public contact nature  Excellent verbal and written communications skills  Currently enrolled in a post-secondary two or four year criminal justice or law enforcement program, or will be enrolled in the next available term

Desired Selection Criteria to Qualify for This Position:  Previous experience as a law enforcement explorer, police reserve, security personnel, or a firefighter;  One year of post-secondary training in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related subjects  General knowledge of Microsoft Office;  Successfully completed Fire Fighter 1 and Fire Fighter II training courses; D:\Docs\2018-01-02\01c5c89e7350b987b24f13fcfd460a24.doc  Previous experience and/or training in first aid as an emergency medical responder.
