EMERGENCY PROCEDURE FOR EXPOSURE TO CLASS 3B OR 4 LASER

EYE INJURIES: 8.30 am-5.00 pm - Bristol Eye Hospital, Lower Maudlin Street, A&E: 0117 928 4613

EYE INJURIES AT All OTHER TIMES AND FOR OTHER INJURIES: BRI, Upper Maudlin Street, A&E: 0117 923 0000

If the casualty has suffered eye injury only :

 Arrange transportation to Bristol Eye Hospital A&E or BRI A&E. The casualty must not drive themselves.  Call in advance to ensure a doctor is on standby.  If necessary call an ambulance & inform UoB Security (0117 33) 11 22 33.

If the casualty has suffered eye and other serious injury, e.g. electric shock, blackout, burns:

 Inform UoB Security, stating Dept. & nature of accident  Dial 999 and ask for an ambulance (21-999 from an internal phone).  Notify a first aider and administer first aid as appropriate.  The ambulance crew will decide the priority of treating the injuries and the destination hospital.

In all cases, provide the following information (which should be in the relevant Risk Assessment): EMERGENCY OPHTHALMIC EXAMINATION LASER Exposure LASER DETAILS: i. Turn off the laser but leave the equipment as it was when the incident occurred so that it can be examined and investigated by the DLSO & LSA.

All accidents and incidents, whether involving an emergency examination or not, must be reported promptly to the UoB Health and Safety Office using the current Accident/Incident Report Form. Any serious injury or 3 day absence from work has to be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) under 'The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995'.
