1. Background: The Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training (CCTST) is supported by the NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award. Integral to the mission of the CCTST is to stimulate the de- velopment of pre-clinical and human clinical trials that seek to improve medical care.

2. Purpose of grants: This small grants program is designed to support clinical and translational science in- vestigators who are seeking preliminary data needed for K23, R01 or similar grant submissions and need the services of one or more of the institutional cores. Investigators may apply for up to $7,500 annually in support for services that would help them obtain preliminary data needed for a new or revised application for extramural funding. The Just- In-Time funding will be awarded to projects which demonstrate an imme- diate need to complete preliminary data with the expectation to expend the funds within 3 to 6 months of award and within the fiscal year awarded.

NOTE: If the core you wish to use is not on this list, or if you are a core director and would like your core to be considered, please send a formal request to have it added to the approved list to [email protected] . Include rationale regarding how your core is utilized for clinical or translational studies. The CCTST leadership will consider the request.

4. Eligibility: Applications will be accepted from all 80% or greater FTE faculty members in the AHC, including basic scientists, physicians, nurses, and other health care faculty with advanced degrees (M.D., Ph.D., M.D.-Ph.D., or equivalent). Clusters of investigators spanning disciplines and pro- grams made up of basic and clinical faculty are strongly encouraged.

5. CCTST Membership: All applicants for Just-In-Time grant consideration must be CCTST members. CCTST membership is free and open to all. For more information about CCTST

3 membership and our online membership registration form go to http://cctst.uc.edu/about/cctst- membership.

6. Process: Applicants are requested to submit a 1-page proposal in the format listed below. There is no deadline; the requests are processed in the order they are received, and the funding will be giv- en on a first-come, first serve basis during the fiscal year to be utilized within the awarded fiscal year.

7. Signatures: The signatures of all investigators and their respective division director or departmen- tal chairperson(s) are required.

8. Required format: Applications must be submitted electronically. Send a PDF file of assembled pro- posal to [email protected]. Application forms (modified from PHS 398 located at http://Grants.Nih.Gov/Grants/Funding/Phs398/Phs398.html) are attached. This RFA is also avail- able on the CCTST website under Funding Opportunities, http://cctst.uc.edu/research-central/fund- ing-opportunities or under Pilot and Collaborative Translational and Clinical Stud- ies, http://cctst.uc.edu/programs/pilot-studies. Proposals must be submitted in single spaced text, one-half inch margins, and no smaller than an 11-point font. Arial or Helvetica typeface is preferred. Proposal text must be limited to one page (including figures but excluding animals and hu- man subjects’ protection and references).

9. Composition of research proposal: Proposals should include a face page and a 1-page brief de- scription of the project including aims and hypotheses, a brief background, the services needed in- cluding costs (up to $7,500) and (most importantly) rationale about how the studies will be used to support their extramural grant submission. Because the applications must be approved by the rele- vant core director, applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with the director prior to submis- sion.

NOTE: For the form on the next page, select Tools from the MS Word menu, then Unprotect Document to in- sert additional documents. You will be able to add text and pages as needed.
