This equipment meets the specifications of ASTM D2892, Distillation of Crude Petroleum (15-Theoretical Plate Column) and its annexes. This distillation system is intended for the distillation of crude oil and other petroleum products from their initial boiling points up to 400 °C. The D2892 method does not permit the collection of fractions above 400 °C. However, in most cases this equipment is capable of distilling out to 450°C if desired.

Crude oil distillations are normally performed at multiple pressure levels. The crude oil is first distilled at atmospheric pressure out to a vapor temperature of around 180 °C. Butane and lower boiling materials are collected in special “cold traps” that are cooled by solid carbon dioxide (dry ice).

After cooling the boiling flask, the distillation system is put under a vacuum around 100 or 50 mm Hg. The distillation is resumed. This portion of the distillation is continued to an atmospheric equivalent temperature of around 280 °C. The boiling flask is cooled and then the vacuum level is reduced to around 10 mmHg.

The distillation is resumed. This portion of the distillation is continued to an atmospheric equivalent temperature of around 400 °C ET.

Of course this is only an example of how this equipment would be used. The operator can choose different starting and stopping temperatures as well as different vacuum levels and numbers of vacuum levels.
