Smyrna Elementary Wellness Activities and Initiatives 2014-15

Fall and Spring 2014-15:

 ASP after school clubs (golf, dance, soccer, martial arts, cheer, basketball)

 Morning walking club for 2nd-5th grade students (Tuesday-Thursday)

 Girls on the Run

 Fitnessgram (twice per year for 4th and 5th; once per year for grades 1-3)

 Teacher running group

 Classroom physical activity breaks (Intelliboost and DVDs)

 Fuel Up to Play 60

 Strong 4 Life – Year 2 school visits and follow up

Fall Semester 2014:

 Staff walking club – September-October led by K. Eldred

 Student fruits/vegetables drawing contest – smoothies for winning grade level

 Smoothies for teachers

 Jingle Jog during PE – 4th and 5th grades – December

 Staff boot camp

 Mobile dental van – December 8th

 Red Ribbon Week – October

 Mass Vision and Hearing Screening (1st and 4th grades) – September-October

 1st Grade Kaiser Permanente home safety presentation – October

 Sickle cell training for staff who teach students with sickle cell – November

Spring Semester 2015:

 Staff walking club – January-May led by A. Morris

 Jonquil Jog – community event (Smyrna ES student, staff, and parent team)

 Staff tennis team

 Incredible Shrinking Stars – Weight loss group – January-April

 Grade level field days – May  Jump Rope for Heart – February

 Relay for Life – May

 Fruit/veggie trays for staff meetings; angel food cake?

 “A Year of Being Well” book for each 4th and 5th grade students to keep

 Cafeteria manager distributed standards-based nutrition lessons to all grade levels (Dec)

Ideas/Initiatives for 2015-16:

 Wellness Team as a cross-grade level key team to meet monthly to increase participation

 Possibly increase PE to 3 days/week for grades 4-5 (or every other day?)

 Increased participation in Fuel Up to Play 60 (Cindy H)

 Cafeteria manager gave 4th and 5th grade USDA learning garden lesson plans to media specialist for check out once our garden is operational (Dec 2014)

 Increased parental and student involvement

 $2000 for physical activity DVDs and health/nutrition games
