Packing List 5 Day/4 Night Backpacking Trip

PACKING LIST – 5 DAY/4 NIGHT BACKPACKING TRIP Indian Heaven Wilderness

Each person needs a backpack large enough to hold all of his/her own equipment plus a portion of the group's supplies (food items that Nick will supply). A backpack may be borrowed from me or rented from REI if needed. Cost of rentals are on top of the $85 price which covers the food, gas and supplies needed for the group on the trip.

Hiking Boots – Bring them if you have some that you normally use and your feet are familiar with. They are not necessary on this trip however. Just a good pair of sneakers will be sufficient. What we want to avoid are blisters so wear socks and good shoes to hike in. Swim suit – Swimming or wading in lakes.

OTHER CLOTHES TO PACK: 3 pair of socks (hiking socks preferred) •1 pair of shorts •3 pair of compression hiking shorts•1 light-weight long sleeved shirt •2 T-shirts (DryFit if possible) •1 wool sweater or fleece pullover (NOT A COTTON SWEATSHIRT IF POSSIBLE) •2 pair underpants •Rain gear (poncho or coat) •Handkerchief or bandanna (serves many purposes!) •1 pair long underwear (tops and bottoms) •Clothes for sleeping •1 winter hat – Even in summer!

2 One-liter Nalgene bottles. Nalgene bottles (found in camping supply stores or department stores) work best for our trip because they serve several purposes. The main purpose is a water container for you to drink out of but we also use all of the collective water bottles to cook with. Nalgene works best with our water filtration systems. Bottles can also withstand boiling water which can help keep a person warm in their sleeping bag. Other brands tend to melt under hot temperatures. 1 Bowl – Plastic or lightweight metal. 1 Spoon and 1 Fork – Plasticware works nicely. 1 light mug (not glass) Sleeping bag - able to fit into a pillow case when rolled up or compressed • Sleeping pad - foam insulate or similar type pad (can be found at dept. stores) Toothbrush & Toothpaste (small tube) Washcloth Headlamp/Flashlight with fresh batteries 1 Whistle Book to read (paperback is best for weight purposes) Bible First aid supplies *Tents – We will have tents for pairs to share to cut on costs and weight

* A Note About Packing: When packing your belongings, first put various items into gallon-size Zip-Loc bags.

Main items that can be rented at REI (I have some of these items for students to borrow) -Backpacks -Trekking poles -Sleeping bags -Sleeping pads

*Remember when you are packing think light and only bring it if you will use it…if you will use it how can you make it lighter. Your backpack always seems lighter at home than when you are 2 miles into the trip!
