Descriptio Cursus (Course Description and Objective)
In Latin IV students interpret and analyze authentic Latin in a variety of genres. The first strand of the Latin Standards of Learning focuses on interpretation of texts because the focus is on comprehension rather than person-to-person communication. Students analyze the effects of stylistic features, such as figures of speech, word choice, and meter, on an author’s work. They expand their knowledge of the perspectives and practices of Greco-Roman civilization by examining its philosophy, religion, mythology, and standards of personal conduct. Students also discuss the contributions of the Romans to modern law, government, art, and architecture.

Have them on your desk at the start of each and every class session. Judicium (Evaluation and Grading Policy) In accordance with Windsor High School policy, student grades will be determined twice each semester based on daily learning activities and mid-and-final semester examinations. These will count as follows: Tests (55%): studied for outside the classroom and taken without the aid of support material. Classwork (30%): quizzes, oral and translation work, worksheets, reports, notebooks, and class participation. Homework (15%): essential for reviewing, practicing, and understanding material introduced in class. Homework is to be completed independently and turned in promptly when due. Late homework may incur a point-deduction penalty. Exams: Midterm & Final Grades: Exams are given at the middle and end of each semester; report cards are issued thereafter. Grades for the first and second half of the semester are determined by averaging the respective nine-weeks learning activities grade and the examination grade; learning activities count 80% ; the examination 20%. In the event of an exam exemption, learning activities shall count 100% of the nine-week grade. The final course grade is an average of the first and second nine-week grades; each half counts 50%. Make-up Work after Class Absences: It is the responsibility of the student to contact the teacher for make-up work, which must be completed within five (5) days of the student’s return to school. Progress Reports will be sent home with your student approx. every two weeks. Please look at this cumulative record of your child’s work and then sign and return it to class by the date requested. Your involvement is essential for completing missing work and correcting slipping grades. Student grades can also be monitored online 24/7 at https://powerschool.iwcs.k12.va.us/public/ Password information can be obtained from the WHS Guidance office.

Dear Parent or Guardian,
Salve! Today was your student’s first day in Latin class. I know that you and I both share high expectations for your child’s success in learning about the language, culture, and continuing influence of the ancient Roman world. To achieve this, it is essential that you and I work together as a team. Towards this end, you will receive regular progress reports regarding your student’s accomplishments; please check these reports carefully and work with me to make sure all necessary assignments get completed in a timely and careful manner. In addition, on these sheets you will find my school phone number and email address; please SAVE YOUR COPY and contact me sooner, rather than later, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s work. On the TEACHER COPY of this course outline, I request that you provide for me 1) an email address and 2) any/all phone numbers at which I might reach you during the day or in the early evening (7-7:30 pm) should it become necessary to contact you regarding your student. Also: will your child have internet access for our online activities? Thanks for your help. We’re looking forward to a great year in Windsor Latin!
Sincerely, Mr. Wickenden 2 February 2011
