[[email protected]] (Aalborg University, Denmark) Abstract Studies of European political party programmes, social movements, news media coverage, scores of books, and social media networks have embraced a negative dialogue towards migrants, whose identities are increasingly seen as incompatible with ‘Western’ values and presenting a major challenge to democracy. Sponsors of these public discourses support anti-immigration and oppositional stances to ‘migrant sympathizers’, who are often represented as traitors or cowards. They also fuel a process where xenophobia, Islamophobia and zero-tolerance have become naturalized and morally accepted ways to respond to the non-Western migrants. The objective of this article is to explore how this position embeds a number of other negativities, such as multiculturalists, feminists, and ‘liberals’ (left- wingers). Data comes from population-wide surveys conducted in the three countries in April 2015. Most Scandinavians relate ‘religion’ with conflict, and half of the population perceives Islam as a threat to their national culture.

    Göran Larsson Essays The future of the study of Islam and Muslims in the Nordic and Scandinavian region A Swedish reading of Tidsskrift for Islamforskning With classical orientalists, such as Frants Buhl (1850-1932) and Johannes Pedersen (1883-1977), and contemporary scholars like Jørgen Bæk Simonsen, Jørgen S. Nielsen and Jakob Skovgaard- Petersen, Denmark has a proud history when it comes to the study of religion, including Islam and the wider Muslim world (on Buhl, see Læssøe 1979; on Pedersen, see Løkkegaard 1982). Besides these scholars, it is also possible to fnd others in the felds of sociology, anthropology, political science and media studies who have made, and continue to make, strong contribu- tions to the study of Islam and Muslims (cf. e.g. Tidsskrif for Is- lamforskning 7(1) 2013). Denmark has also produced a number of strong female scholars, such as Garbi Schmidt, Lene Kühle, Kate Østergaard, Nadia Jeldtof, Birgitte Schepelern Johansen, Jytte Klausen and Catharina Raudvere (who is Swedish, but holds a professorship in the History of Religions at the Univer- sity of Copenhagen). Hence it is evident that the study of Islam and Muslims is thriving in Denmark. Tat said, however, it is also apparent that the academic study of minority religions (not least Islam) is ofen perceived as a controversial topic. From this point of view Denmark is not unique: studying Islam and Mus- lims generally causes debate and sometimes even tension with- in both academia and the public sphere.     Islamic activism in a multicultural context – ideological continuity or change? 2 Fact box Description of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) in the Western world’s messages and methods against target groups in Sweden 2017 Malmö University Docent Aje Carlbom The risk of recognizing MB-associated organizations as the most important representatives for Muslims and Islam is that a minority of politically oriented activists with a missionary religious view is given the possi- bility of advancing their positions in public at the expense of the majority of Swedish citizens with a Muslim cultural background. A problem with MB-associated organizations is that they contribute to creating political and social polariza- tion by pitting an imagined “we” (Muslims) against an imagined “them” (non-Muslims). This is an identity politics strategy that pits groups against each other and thereby has a negative impact on democratic rules regarding the debate of factual issues. The risk of uncritically allocating resources to MB-associated organizations is that they influence the inte- gration process negatively in that they want to protect Muslims from influence by the majority society by building up a parallel Islamic sector of public bodies, a so-called Muslim civil society.
