This is a reading course. The paper assignment is a review essay of one or more of the synthetic works assigned (Gellner, Hroch, Seton-Watson, Pauley, Kann, Bérenger, or another work in consultation with the instructor), exploiting monographic studies on the syllabus as well as your own research. In this review you must explain the substantial contribution and historiographic significance of the chosen work before moving to any critique. At least one line of critique must concern causality. If you wish to write a research paper instead you may do so, in consultation with the instructor. The weekly assignment is to prepare a brief oral introduction to the reading.

What are the connections between the structure and policies of the Habsburg monarchy and the rise (or the absence) of modern nationalism in central Europe?
