Lesson Name: Network & Library Orientation Overview: This lesson is to establish new passwords for student accounts on the CASD network and to familiarize students with the CAMS East Library and its policies and procedures. Audience 7th grade students and their teachers Objectives 1 1. To establish understanding of policies relating to CASD technology 2 2. To familiarize students with the library layout and holdings 3 2. To familiarize students with the technology in the library 4 3. To prepare students to be independent users of the library Relation to PA Academic Standards: 3.5 Technology Relation to Library Curriculum: Unit Essential Question: How do I fulfill my social responsibilities as a member of a learning community? Concept: Social Responsibility 3.2.2. LEQ: What is my role in a learning community? Relation to ELA Curriculum: Generalized need to be able to use technology & find books in library Concept: Perspective (3.3.2) LEQ: How can I seek others' viewpoints? LEQ: What do I do and say when I am seeking others' viewpoints?

Background Knowledge 1 • The audience has previously used libraries and online catalogs. Instructional Roles  The librarian will assist students to understand the policies and procedures of the district in terms of technology and library use. She will reiterate how to use the Web-based library catalog, bookmark favorite sites, and set the username and password for Grolier Online. The classroom teacher will help individual students as needed.  Teacher has option to show her CAMS Web site and explore it with the students. Unit Content  Show features of the Library Catalog, including the variety of ways to search: Destiny Quest (and exit), Basic, POWER (Boolean searching and searching other libraries), Visual, Categories, Number, and Barcode searches. Searches are possible by Keyword, Title, Author, Subject, or Series.  Students look for and check out library materials. Teaching Strategies 1. Lead students through network account password setup, Word setup, bookmarking favorite sites, & Grolier Online username/password insertion. 2. Demonstrate where to find the library catalog and how to use it. Destiny Quest is default; show how to exit it. 3. Address library policies and procedures. Materials and/or Equipment 1 • Computer with attached projector for showing online catalog. 2 • Computers for students to explore the library catalog. Guided and/or Independent Practice 1. Librarian guides lesson. 2. Students use the library independently and demonstrate an understanding of how to find and use the library catalog. Assessment In response to direct inquiry, students will show the librarian their ability to use the new Destiny library catalog. Those who have difficulties will work on it until they have mastered it. By watching and listening, the librarian will assess whether students are exhibiting quiet, well- mannered library behavior. In response to verbal questions, students will demonstrate to the librarian that they understand where to find particular materials in the library. Modifications and/or Adaptations Modifications will be made as needed for students with limited English or physical limitations. Follow-Up Activities Students will be using the library to find pleasure reading and to find print and non-print materials to complete research assignments.
