2 Picture a Story 2009 In March the Schools Library Service held their annual ‘Picture A Story’ event for KS1 & 2 pupils. For the first time this was organised as a joint venture with The County Art Collection. The guest speaker was Chris Wormell, award winning illustrator and author. We displayed pictures from the reading list books together with pictures and 3D items from the Art Collection, the children had to answer questions relating to the books with the pictures as the clues.

The Art trail created a new opportunity for schools to work with and enjoy a selection of works from the Collection through a variety of art based activities – we even had our own Anthony Gormley ‘ Living Statues’ plinthe ! Eight schools (67 Yr 6. pupils) attended and the comments were all positive from both adults and pupils:

“Awesome – I liked everything!” “ I couldn’t believe the quality of the Art Collection.”

“ I didn’t have a favourite thing because I enjoyed it all.”

Flamstead School Visit to the Art Collection e t Lynne Evans (Art Teacher) writes….. t As Art Teacher at Flamstead School, I wanted to take the more able artists in yrs.3,4,5 & 6 on an art trip. I approached Diane at the County Art Collection and she was happy to set up a visit. I chose six children who were very excited at having been chosen. e All six children had a great morning and it was hard to make them leave to get back to school in time for l lunch! The journey back was full of chat about what they had seen and they continued working on their sketches back at school. s Thank you Diane for a really informative and fun packed morning, I enjoyed it as much as the children! w Olivia S. & Olivia K. write……

e Our Art Teacher, Lynne Evans, chose six children to go on a visit to the County Art Collection. The six children that were picked felt very lucky to be chosen for a very special art trip. When we got to the place where it was, we all thought it would be very boring because it was a library service. However, we met a very nice lady, Diane, she was happy to show us around the Art Collection store room. There were N many different paintings, we were told what paints were used for which kind of painting and we were shown the largest and the smallest pictures in the Collection. We played a game where we picked a number and tried to find that painting. Everyone said it was fun and interesting looking at the different

9 paintings and sculptures. In Diane’s room there were lots of pictures and sculptures on display, she told us about some of the African masks and the other multi-cultural paintings and she told us the story of Rahma and Sita and we 0 saw the masks for each character in the story. We were shown many paintings from around the world and some from South America. We also looked at a video of how to make an African cloth. We did some

0 sketching of the objects on display. We saw some stuffed animals including a hedgehog, some of us were scared but we all touched the spikes of the hedgehog and they were surprisingly soft, not spiky at all !

2 It was a very interesting to look at all the art work and we all enjoyed the trip. It was a good opportunity and we would like to visit again some time. Then it was time to leave and we said thank you to Diane who helped us to understand how she worked and the history of the County Art Collection. We also learnt how all the paintings went out to all the other schools in the County.
