Dear Lower School parents,

Greetings from third and fourth grade! Encouraging your child to read through the summer will help maintain his or her reading skills over the long break. In order to meet your child’s individual reading needs, each student was assessed prior to the end of the school year to determine their independent reading level. Your child is currently reading at a ______to ______independent level.

Each student is expected to read at least two books over the summer. One book is required for each grade level and is listed below. Your child is expected to complete the attached Summer Reading Journal, which should be updated at the conclusion of each chapter of the required novel. Your child should bring their book and completed reading journal to school in the fall to be used as a resource during classwork activities.

Rising third graders: Leroy Ninkers Saddles Up or The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (both by Kate DiCamilio)

Rising fourth graders: A Lion to Guard Us, by Clyde Robert Bulla (copies available for checkout in the office)

The second book your child is expected to read this summer can be any selection at his or her independent reading level. The Accelerated Reader Book Finder system or the Scholastic Website should be utilized to help you identify additional novels that fit your child’s independent reading level. Please see the attached information to assist you in finding an appropriately leveled book for your child. A summer reading journal does not need to be completed for your child’s independent book.

Please do not hesitate to call the front office should you have questions or concerns. We look forward to working with you next year to make your child’s Lower School experience a great one.

Sincerely,

Wendy Gardiner
