DESIGN, OPERATIONAL PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE APOLLO LUNAR RECEIVING LAB

This lecture is a follow-on activity to the May 16, 2012, tour of the Lunar Sample Repository Facility conducted by Dr. Bogard on May 16 for NAL members

Dr. Bogard and Mr. McCollum will give an informal presentation on the design, planning and implementation of the Apollo Program Lunar Receiving Lab

Dr. Don Bogard was a JSC employee from 1968 – 2010. He collaborated with several other young scientists specifically to design and build the science labs in the Lunar Receiving Lab (LRL) and to conduct preliminary science testing of the returned lunar materials. He became part of the MSC/JSC planetary materials research organization and was a lunar sample principal investigator 1971- 2010. Over the period 1990 – 2010 he was the JSC senior scientist on planetary materials. He now holds a part-time research fellowship at the Lunar and Planetary Institute. Gary McCollum was a JSC employee from 1966 – 2004. He began his career with the USAF at Eglin AFB in 1963 as a Project Scientist. He worked in the Medical Research and Operations Directorate as a Quarantine Officer for the quarantine missions and managed the Medical Surveillance Office for the Apollo and Skylab missions. He developed early Shuttle life sciences experiments. He also worked in the Shuttle Program Office and at NASA HQ to integrate SpaceLab and other payloads. On return to JSC he worked on payload integration with the international partners.
