Q: “How does one become a Camp Crier?”
A: “Well, you know, my dad was a Camp Crier. And when he died, he left the feathers and stuff that they gave him when he became a Camp Crier. They was in a bundle and he left it and told my mother that any time one of his sons got into a traditional circle and was asked to be a Camp Crier that they could use those bundles. At one time in Lodge
Grass, we had a meeting to organize the mid-winter powwow…dance. I don’t like
“powwow,” I don’t like that word. It’s celebration. And my brother-in-law Cedric Walks came up and asked me to speak for him because he wasn’t a speaker or Camp Crier. And
I told him I didn’t have the right. So my mother heard it and she came and there was Joe
Morrison, Alex LaForge, Pete Good Luck, Jim Big Leg, and Andrew Bird In Ground that were Camp Criers that were there. And my mother called their attention to the bundle that belonged to my dad that was to be given to any one of the sons that was interested in being Camp Crier. So of this group, John Half, was my grandfather, Pete Good Luck was my clan father, and Junior Daylight and Junior Brown. So, when my mother explained the bundle, they told me that that following weekend to build a sweat and invite these four camp clan fathers. And then the others came with them when I did that and I had a feast. And they took this bundle and they smudged it and put it up on top of the sweat lodge. They took me in, they smudged me, and they prayed over me, and when it was over they took this bundle and gave it to me – my four clan fathers. This was what my dad would have done, but he died, so my clan fathers took it upon themselves to do it.
And they gave it to me, and then I carried on my dad’s function as a Camp Crier. And then later on, Pete Good Luck gave me his too…in his Praise Song. And then Tom
Yellowtail, the last year of his life when we were together he gave me his four different
Praise Songs so I have six now that I can use.”
Q: “Can you explain to us what a Praise Song is?”
A: “It’s when there’s a child or a person that is being honored. They call upon a clan father or a grandfather to parade him in a circle, or in a parade, and then Camp Crier follows there and sings this special song honoring – it’s an honoring song. And that’s what’s called a Praise Singing.”
